hmm... what to add here? i would say, follow your heart and see what happens, it worked for me. i do agree with other speakers that some kind of income is handy and necessary, but it's not the most important in life, i guess you just have to do what you like most, you will always learn something, meet people, get new chances, etc.

And, since you are still young, there is always a possibility to switch to something else if it doesnt go the way you want... good luck, paul

Definitely wise words Colin...
I am quite young myself, being a couple of years younger than maxim, and even though i've been making electronic music half my life (since i was about 9 starting with eJay) i have a feeling that it won't provide for me in the future because i'm almost definitely not talented enough at it, and because the music i love tends to be the more underground music...
Also, I don't have the money to buy expensive hardware etc. (i'm sure Many people are in the same position as me on this forum) and my parents won't give me a cushy lifestyle, so all my equipment and all my knowledge i've acquired myself (i work as a photographer which gets me abit of cash, and my schooling is funded by a music scholarship), I therefore feel personally that something like an SAE education is a luxury that might not be fruitful - hope you understand what I mean.

I agree very much with what has been said already... chances are that music will never provide fully for you, it is (from what I know) one of the most difficult businesses in the world to enter into and become fully fledged in...
I think that the best thing to do is to get an education in something that will guarantee a job with an income - it might be boring but you can release the stress through music :
you will have money to buy equipment and who knows where the music will lead anyway, you might make it big. Personally, at the moment i'm applying to do Art foundation course for a year and then English at Uni because I enjoy it more than other subjects and it's also quite creative (and hopefully it will get me a job in the future )...

For all of us on this forum music means alot but very very very very few of us could ever survive solely on it or have the knowledge of someone like Colin (who knows alot!) to obtain a job like his. Think about what is the best, and most likely way for you to be happy...
In the end it is your choice entirely, so good luck making it

Peace
(sorry for long post )

if u still want to do it after all this, then u might have what it takes to be a professional At least u will have the motivation required to make it in that industry

me, i stick with programming... It's a lot like making music, and there's a lot more money in it

Please don't be mistaken that just because I post in this forum a lot and I have some blue words under my name that my opinion is worth any more than anyone else's. Anyone can gain the knowledge I have by working hard and keeping their eyes and ears open. It's what you do with it that counts.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I hear here a lot words of wisdom. I guess we share more then I thought. I wished we had the forum 20 years ago.           "a new art came into my mind which only you can create, the Art of Noises, the logical consequence of your marvelous innovations." Russolo, 1913

"I think that the best thing to do is to get an education in something that will guarantee a job with an income - it might be boring but you can release the stress through music"

also dont forget to check out jobs that also offer alot of time off as well as dependable income.
Portion Control, one of the bigger old school industrial artist is a high school english teacher in upstate NY. The medical field also offers alot in this area(nurse, technician)as the pay and jobs available are good enough that in a few years you could probly work 2 days a week and be well off financially.
There use to be a really funny radio commercial on the radio about how a guy with an art history degree can serve a cup of coffee better than anyone, you dont want to be in that position.
Also with sound engineering look at the way things are going, more and more the artist themselves are doing this job with home studios. In 20 years, when its pretty normal that artist started playing around with Cubase and VST plugins when they were 10, who is going to need an audio engineer?

hello Maxim ..
i'm 38 and i think Coolin gave you the best advice:
finish your school ...
choose a job that will give you: CASH & FREE TIME !!!!
these both points are really importante ... i mean...if you choose a job that will bring you looot of cash but then you back home totally smatch you will have no more energ to write music...
so the best is a job like coolin .. in education .. cause they have there loot of vacation !!! or informatic programmer .. these kind of job you can work from home .. and in freelance ... and so you can work at 50 % to pay the base of your life .. and then spend all your time writing music !!

the second point is : if the only way you have to food you and live is music: you will quite quick start to do music that your hearth don't like .. i mean you will start doing commercial bullshit !!!
like so many talented artists .. i know them .. they can do amazing underground music .. but they have child,.. a flat to rent.. blbablabla... and so they say they have no choice.. they have to produce bullshit music( they say themself that this is shit .. but that people love this shit .. ... you see what i mean !! ;o)
ok so if you''ve got a "food"job .. then you can do music only with love !! and so you didn't have to do these bullshit compromise !!

sorry to break your dream Maxim .. but you asked the question .. so: here was the answers .. maybe you will look as us as old wankers.. ;o) .. no problem but believe us in a couple of years you will be happy that you meet a man call cooolin in a freaky web forum ;o))))))))))

PS and think a looot before choosing you carrier !!! not good to change non-stop your job ... the "system" don't like it ;o) .. so not too much stress .. listen your spirit!!! cause then the choice you make NOW .. got a loooot of chance to stick at you ALL YOUR LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck ...

On the other hand...

Go hell-for-leather into your dreams... don't look back... just do what you know is right in your heart - that's what I did when I finished my degree; I was piss-poor for 10 years but I never regretted it for a second. It was those 10 years that put me where I am now (although remeber my degree was computing, not audio engineering).

Don't give the universe a chance to turn you away from what you really want to do with your life. Don't let 'old wankers' [LOL] tell you what you should do - it's your life and you're the only one who has to live it.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I can tell you this from my point of view...
after i finished the audio engineering in
sae, and came back home, i realized im not sure i actualy want to work in a studio for a living, on one hand id love to, on the other, the fealing of nowere realy to develope from it to othere directions, and
further on, is always in the air when i think about it...
for that there is first the huge luck we have in being able to purchase a small studio
based on a computer sound card maybe a keyboard and a bunch of FREE pluggins and vsts...
the other thing wich im giving it a shot right now, is studying something that you can find a job in as a living, and one day might be able to combine it with music, im heading for the electronix studys, i gave it a shot for a couple of months, saw my mathematics arnt good enough, and im studying now maths in order to be able to come back to it proparly (the electronix studyed that is...)
its not easy, alot of times not very fun,
its alot of practicing calculations at home,
and most of the times dealing with numbers
so im sure that if you just want to tweak some knobs and make electronic music for fun
this is not for you...the same is with programming i asume...
but thats it...this is what im giving a shot at right now...and is a bosibility if you want a sound related job...

I say study music if you really want to do it!
maybe you should do a road map for your self,

put your goal in the end of the road and make sidetracks that leads to the main road, those sidetracks should represent everything you need to do the get to the end.....cause its not a straight road to just run on..

first make a dot where you are at right now, and think about everything you know you have to do to get there, even write down things that is not related to your goal(though everything is related in some way or the other) maybe you have some other studies to finish, mark it as a sidetrack...

its impossible to calculate all the sidetracks that you might have to take in life, but if you have a goal you will always reach the main road or at least pass it at times, be sure to take some time to think about what you really want to do when you are on the main road, if it really is the road you want to walk... maybe you have found out other things about your self... you never know where the roads might take you...

Good luck and follow your heart and visions!

My intentions were to join a superior school of music here in my city (called ESMAE by the way) and take the "production and music technologys" degree

But sadly my willness for studying is fading away more and more. Many of you probably have been thru this.. I know its bad and all that, and I can totally see myself regreating it in some years from now.. But sometimes you gotta risk it. Its just a matter of deciding if I want to take the final step forward and invest the major time and money in creating music, or if I want to put a pause on it and continue studying.
