In all honesty the free programs do not offer much to create beautiful art pieces let alone making animations. If you can get any version of photoshop you can do amazing things. I started with version 4 that was a gift and still use it. The more you use it the better the results. All my animations take form in photoshop but its not a cheap program. Adobe makes elements that is a stripped down version and pretty good. Paint shop pro can help and is less expensive. If someone offers a copy of photoshop be careful as you do not want to destroy your computer with a virus or worm. keep in touch I will be glad to offer help in any way.

+ more than 20,000 hours of hard work and rendering!

Massive is the best program for crowd simulations as well!

After Effects is pretty cool. It now works both with a node graph or in layers.
It's a great cross-over from Photoshop!

Add some fractal noise and play with some plug-ins. Its a great way to start on your journey!

You could Try digital tutors, fx phd and turbo squid for some cool tutorials!
