hello people does anybody know basic rules to work with poliurethane foam?
how long does it take to be hard but still enough viscous to be modelled, or do you know other similar materials?

If you are talking about the sheets that you heat up in order to bend/shape, when you heat it above 120F and as it cools below that point it will reharden

Search sculpture foam
comes in half & 1 inch thicknesses
ventilate

no man, it's sold in doses like spray cans: you spray out this slimy substance that keeps inflating in a foamy way until it gets hard. if you spray out a 1 centimeter diameter ball, by the time it's got hard it'already more than 5 cm big. once hard it's very solid can hold weights and be cutten and it's no longer toxic.
the solvent substance that keeps it liquid in the can is pretty toxic and must be handled with gloves in ventilated rooms, i know so far, but wolud like to hear hints about modeling and possible applications.
it's quite diffused in deco world at least in switzerland

As far as my experience with that staff goes, after it gets hard and dry (in few seconds) you can cut it with a heated, sharp knife, to whatever shape you want.
The thing is I only manage to find it in spray cans that do not hold a lot of material. So in order to make a deco that is big enough you need a lot of cans. A company that makes huge sculptures (more then a man size) from this staff told me they have a machine that produce it.
I will be very happy to know it can be done by homely means.           "We would sing and dance around

poliurethane foam gets hard in 15 minutes at least and the inner core needs hours depending on the size, you can use a hot blade but thats not necessary

and about home made : you need very toxic solvents , forget about it

to make big decos you can use an inner core of metal net or or any other material to give the desired shape (almost) and spray upon it and then model the foam, you spare lots of money this way

for home made stuff you can use wet paper stripes dipped into (in italian is called=) fish glue, totally harmless powder to be added to water. then you lay these stripes onto the shape to cover (inner cores are easy to do with metal nets, cause it's easy to model the metal into the shape you want), then yoou wait a day that the fish glue is dry et... voila!!!

fish glue is atoxic and environment friendly: no toxins and cans to throw away and is no derivate of petrol, but far from the phisical properties of poliurethane foam
