Obviously there is crap outboard, just as there are crappy plugins.
Assuming this compressor lives up to its interweb reputation... is having some analogue outboard that much better than a plugin? I'm looking to introduce more outboard this year.

Supposedly it sounds great and is insanely affordable! (UK £125 if you look about).
I'm trying to make my studio a bit more fun at the moment - I want a more hands on experience, so I've opted for a couple of new knobby devices.
Is an affordable, great sounding compressor going to give me any extra analogue sparkle?

The more I read, the more brilliant it sounds.
The real analogue flavour helps give sounds a more 3D feel to them, as opposed to a plugin.
I'm sold.
Ordered mine just now, £130, bargain! |

Clean, transparent sound hummm i would go with colored gears first ,but be sure to always try them before buy , i would go like this>>preamp first then eq and compressor.a good preamp is enought to make everyhting sound more warm with more depth . |

yes dunno about the price of that comp but just wanted to suggest to always try hardware in the store if you can (and then in ur studio) cause some gear that are praised for rock for example may not work at all for psytrance.(or you may dislike the sound )
a mate have the api2500 it s a nice comp for sure i wish i had one too but most of the color ,separation and depth in his mix come from his analog mixer and preamps .(can t wait to have a faster computer to try again nebula it seems to work great for that ) |

So for a colourful 'musical' compressor you have to pay a lot more to get something worthwhile?
IS there any fun colourful outboard gear that springs to mind that is also reasonably priced?
Now I've finally got a soundcard with some ins 'n' outs I intend to start using them

Tomos, let us know how you like it... and where you bought it from for £130
for what it's worth i have heard that FMR's 'Really Nice Levelling Amplifier' is more of a colour box than the RNC.
i love extra knobby devices and have recently got lots more i/o as well, it's great slowly accumulating stuff - but the one thing to remember is that, workflow wise, hardware can be more difficult to integrate smoothly.
if you just want a 'set and forget' reverb or compressor that's fine, but if you're really going to run lots of stuff through outboard then you can spend a lot of time getting levels and gain structure right, recording, etc. etc...

I received the compressor yesterday. £130 from ebay, not a place I would normally shop, but I took the chance and it worked out great!
First impressions are that it is incredibly transparent. I mean - incredibly! I need some more cables, but my next job is to try out the sidechain, I bet it would be excellent.
I looked at some waveforms post compression and you can see the compression, it can easily be set to be very smooth on transients. I'd say it tends to bring out the upper range of sounds.
Altogether, I really love it. It looks cool, sounds lovely and does the job perfectly. The integration in Cubase is so easy I want to use it as my go-to compressor, bouncing as I go.
I've got it on the desk right in front of me, and using it as an insert in Cubase is so little trouble, its not a big change to workflow. |

if u're getting the Aurora, just get the AES32 RME instead of AIO... I think.
