Trial and Error, and a lot Blood Sweat and Tears

I love the sound of FM8, but couldn`t understand the damn thing either, and the presets suck-ass. So I started loading patches I kinda liked, and just started to wildly change parameters in the expert mode page. And I have made some pretty cool patches, however I have no theoretical idea how I did it, it was just trial and error

So, I know this doesn`t help you at all, but that`s how i use my FM8 and it works out well sometimes, its like a surprise box to me that produces surprisingly cool sounds           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

I don`t know, i don`t like the presets. But as I said I have tweaked them to my liking through lots of Trial and Error, the patches I made sound nothing like the original presets anymore. But to make a patch from absolute zero, good luck, hehehe           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

Trial and error, but once its learned it seems so easy...

Took me 8 years of working with digital audio to learn

and i finally saved a patch for the FM8 that i made from scratch

Its dry, but that leaves room for effecting           .

also what helped me get familiar with teh synthesis method was using Live's Operator, and Andychrist's video

Operator I think of as a My First FM Synth, its considerably more straightforward and easier to get good sounds out of than FM8, and Andy explains it well.

It helps me to imagine the waveforms modulating each other, imagining their frequency interactions, visualizing how theyre FMing . It never hurts to read up on the synthesis technique either.

ALSO IMPORTANTLY;

TURN DOWN YOUR SPEAKERS when messing with any FM, they can cause dangerously high frequency spikes. Id recommend one use a limiter with 0db ceiling when starting out with FM, and avoid headphones!!!           .
