I got sick from the fm with subtractor. I want to make some new leads with the Malstrom. Anybody knows if it's possible to do fm ?
Don't tell me to use the fm waveforms, I want to do real fm with 2 oscilators.

For FM use Sub - simple as that.
You can route Subs output into Mals filters, if that is the reason you want to use it in the first place.

thanx Top-down, your idea is also good, but I was thinking about using the waveforms of the Malstrom for fm synth. I tried like a million leads with the sub, so I want to chnage to somthing new. For now I'll settel for that. |

Look, what they tried to do is givin' you 2 synths that'll cover whole range of methods : FM, AM, Substractive and granullar (sort of). All naked. No built in FX (like the VSTs chorus, reverb and etc...). All that very modullar.
The only reason Mal sounds different is its filters and the good think is the routing option into them.
Have fun !!!

I dont think malstrom can do FM like what your asking for. That would be killer, i think maelstrom is a great idea but it doesnt sound very granular to me.The problem with alot of vsti is that outside of psytrance most people wouldnt want to
"blow up" the FM carrier like what psy people do. |

how about the wave oscilators?.,
i think it adds quite a bit to the sound.,

yeah ZilDoggo, that's what I've thought. I wanted to work with the PWM waveform and FM. I hope that I won't have to wait for reason 5. anyway, I already created a nice lead like Top-down suggested. |

"The problem with alot of vsti is that outside of psytrance most people wouldnt want to

hmm., well ,i think its just because there are basically 2 differen approaches to FM.,
one is the analog way, where one osc controlls the basic pitch of another oscilator.,
the other is Phase modulation, licenced by yamaha, and working in a slightly differnet way with a different character.,
and i think a lot of people dont realize that most of those psy fm sounds are actually PM instead of the FM on their virtual analog synths
honestly, PM sounds more musical and harmonic than analogue FM.
unfortunately, all algorithms for PM are patented, so it's difficult to make clones of this., i know of only 2 implementations besides yamahas and that's FM7 from naive instruments and the clavia nord modular series.,
there is also something from casio calles phase distortion or something, which is kindof similar to PM but avoiding any patent infringment., it sounds a bit different as well.,
also, proper yamaha style fm synths have multiple oscilators with an envelope on every osc and different ways to interconnect oscs,
so there are a lot of new possibilities compares to 2 osc analog style fm.,
so, there is just a hell lot more to FM than reason
