Does anyone know if this exists? And I'm not talking about separate "modes", I'm thinking more along the lines of...

an ARBITRARY number (like, 2 or 3 or 10 or 20) of sinewave oscillators which can be modulated (independently or otherwise) by an ARBITRARY number of modulating oscillators

and THEN run through filters.

Just realized that ableton's Operator does this. But are there any VSTs that have similar functionality and work as well or better?

Surge gets close, I think. I know you can do wavetable + sub + fm; not sure about additive.

My 'try before you buy' copy failed on me and I haven't decided if I want to shell out for it. Amazing synth, with one of the best oscilator sections I've ever seen, but very sterile/software sounding.           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

zebra or groups of ableton Operators is what you're looking for imo            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Absynth has only FM mode and only oscs in the same slots can modulate each other. So I guess not...

What about FM8? It has filter section so it can be used a subtractive synth...

Here is a link from a german synth side (amazona.de)with a very complex reaktor ensemble. This is a workshop project
for understanding creating synth in NI Reaktor-
it`s very cpu hungry,very complex,but with
the workshop documentary (german language) very helpfull for understanding different kinds of synth-architecture:
