Flow Recs - Overview VA
1. Feedbaeka - BITMONX
2. Binary - YUMADE
3. In deck out - ECHOTEK
4. Hentai - BUBBLE DRAGON
5. Is this now - MANMADEMAN
6. Do you feel - SAFI CONNECTION
7. Ase - SENSiENT
8. Psy fi stereo - DJ SANGEET
9. Ectoplasmic - ELECTRIC MELON
10. Supernatural - RED SEAL

Flow's lastest offering covers a wide range of psytrance from more morning prog to some uptempo funk and even a lil bit of dub.
Bitmonx opens the cd with a standard morning scando roller. Rolling bassline some nice organic sounds, and subtle progression.
Yumade kick it along with another sparse offering, driving perscussion catchy rhythms and weird atmospherics, useful as a night time filler or mixing fodder , not much going on.
Echotek bring it up a notch with some crankin organic techy prog.Fat rolling bassline that seems to get a little repetitive, lovely trippy sounds floating around, in yer face progressive music.
Bobble Dragon continue to build the cd with the great spacious, colorful Hentai. Lot's of changes , always evolving without overlayering and the samples of what sounds like someone scrapping there fingernails down a chalkboard tops of a splendid track. More fuller sounding then Steve's recent tracks
MMM are back with Is this now. More in the style of what they were releasing when the first album came out, this is no holds barred funky psy. Great rhythms, and many ripping keyboard lines, this brings back the feeling of there more full on tracks. Only problem seems to get a little messy with all the sound flying around in the last peak.
A group I've not much heard of Saffi Connection top off the banging psy setction of the cd with a very weird full on morning track. Alien singing and some great percussion breaks, great ideas just a little rough in the exectution.
Sensient is next taking it back down into some atmospheric techy prog. Chunky big intro leads into some very fat beats, with a nice fuzzy bassline. tracks builds into some nice trippy sounds, reminds me of some of the praecox tracks just not as spartan. Really fat production.
Sangeet's Psy-fi stereo has a nice scando rhythmic underlay but the heavily overused trance melodic touches really present a track that's has nothin new to offer.
Electric Melon bring it back down with a slow moving morning number. Good when brain activity has shut down, just soak in the grooves. Good for those who like slow and subtle progression in the music.
Red Seal Finish it of with Supernatural, A very smokey dub track.
Overall Overview offers a nice collection of different sounds. The build up into the more noiser tracks and back down again works well but some of the tracks are just plain average with a complete lack of orignality.
My favourite tracks

psyshop describe this as the compilation of this summer... well i have my doubts on that.
(IMO widescreen is the release of this summer... so far) but, what's sure is that we do have another quality release from flow rec's. good progressive tracks for the night and morning time.

fav's: 1,3,4,7 (2 is not doin too bad as well...)

Maybe I had too high expectations, but I found this compilation pretty disappointing.

There are a few good moments though. Sensient once again delivers an interesting piece of dancefloor material, and even though it's not his best release so far it really stands out on this compilation.

A track also to remember is "Psy Fi Stereo" from Sangeet. I'm not a big fan of his style, but the quite uplifting scando sounds in this track does work pretty well. Perhaps not one of the most memorable tracks this year, but again a track that stands out.

The biggest disappointment on this compilation is Bitmonx. The last couple of years he made some excellent tracks, but got of with a pretty weak start of this year, before "Tane" from the "Widescreen" compilation. Unfortunatly he disappoints me again with "Feedbaeka". Quite boring track. Not the worst one here though, but I was expecting more after the impressive live set he delivered in Århus this spring.

So, to sum it up:

My favs: 4, 7, 8.

Verdict: 6/10

Flow Records can do better than this - and I'm quite sure they will in the future           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

i agree with pr0 - i expected more from bitmonx... standard and boring may be the best description. tho i like his new sounds, this is a weak track
following are two progressive tracks, both very balanced and nice to your ears. average stuff.
bubble dragon delivers a shuddering intro, a hard KEBB structure and wierd scratches, drums, voices and a lot of flanger. cool cool.
the next piece of music kicks off with a mechanic groove, driving one. i'd prefer this track on a hot morning @ party. that "siren" entering @ around 2 min's even intensifies the party feeling. mallorca music
safi connection comes along in a funky structure. i expected less, a standard full on stabberkiller. but its more, nice floating melodic morning tune, nice vocals.
sensient made number 7. i like that intro even more than the bubble dragon one. it leads into a bashing (K+B)BBB structure and sensient a-like wicked sample combos and unconventional percussion and hard synthies, i like muuuaaach.
sangeet alder schwede delivers a linear clubby groove that evolves into an uplifting morning goodie. but it lacks of feel in some moments...average. good for party.
electric melon didnt waste time for an intro unfortunately, but u still get stable off beat structure. again rather unconventional driving percussion, solid all the way. neat melodies and pads give this structure the right hook. favourite morning tune of these weeks
last but not least, red seal - supernatural, the, imho, necessary closin track. future psydub with vocals and IMPRESSIVE guitar, percussion work. i'm chilling.

bottom line:

i enjoy this compi. good track selection, very broad. as it should be, and it works. i hope other labels will continue.

Favs. 4 (!), 6, 7 (!!), 9 (!!), 10 (!!) but they are all good..

btw, i agree that copy kills music. but is it really necessary to write in THREE times on the cd???          Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

Sensi-Tent hehehe funny TYPO!

I like this cd... it covers some nice ranges in musical aspects and does it with a twitch... and its funny to see labels going for the "copy kills your music" on the covers nowadays... maybe it will help, i do hope so... anyways nice work dj pena... im a proud owner of it.

I couldn't tell if the MMM was an error or not, The way the pitch changes at the end uncomfortable, I really like the track but the last peak just screws with my brain, Sounds like its going out of sync.
Anyway, I agree about Bitmonx, very standard track.

Well, I really liked this one. Flow has been presenting us with great compilations. It is probably not the best one from this label, that title must be awarded to Blue (one of the best progressive compils ever, imho), but it still is a great piece of plastic to own. Up there with Widescreen in the compils of the Summer podium. Great tracks that fit perfectly with each other (the name of the label must mean something). Would like to point out Bubble Dragon, Manmademan (new album coming soon also on Flow), Sensient, Electric Melon and the dubby Red Seal.

8/10

V/A - Overview [Flow 2003] CD

Overview breaks out of the mold and offers a compilation featuring many different styles of psychedelic trance. DJ Pena adeptly selects several good songs, though some choices fall short of greatness by a considerable margin. Nonetheless it has been in my player for a little while now and I went back to give it a proper review.

Bitmonx open the album with Feedbaeka. They have their fans, but I would not count myself as one. The song is a pulsating array of smooth sounds done in the German progressive psytrance style, and is fairly upbeat. Hypnotic is the approach and plenty of polish is evident. Though this track fails to impress me, I recognize my reaction as a matter of taste. Feedbaeka might be considered quite good by ears with a different set of priorities.

Yumade's Binary follows up with a heavier tune from the originators of the French psychedelic techno sound. By 2003 they hadn't been very active, and no one has heard much from them since - but Yumade was once one of the premier groups for the techtrance style. This later production features a hard pulsing beat and stark industrial percussion amidst an apprehensive atmosphere laced with weird chimes and odd noises. By the two minute mark the bass line recieves a serious upgrade, and the track begins to groove along with mechanical grace. No surprises will shock you as the song plays out, but it retains the quality heard in the opening sequences without faltering. A choice selection for psychedelic techno fans.

Echotek drops in for yet another compilation appearance with In Deck Out. There are some techtrance elements to be found here as well, with a hypnotic approach and a sparse arrangement of sounds over a fat groovy bass section. There is little to distinguish it from the rest however, and for that reason it is just another mediocre tune.

Bubble Dragon's Hentai was my reason for buying this compilation. Double Dragon is a favourite of mine regardless, and here he can be found working with Amiad Kav in Japan. Creeping swamp sounds greet the listener at the very beginning, and a haunting atmosphere builds as industrial sounds cavort in the darkened introduction. Acidic synth lines herald the incoming beat, and soon enough the song is stomping off to an incredible beginning. The kick and bass combination is heavy and fat, with incredible production. The sound of thunder in the distance and more croaking frogs provide the impetus for a new change, and the first hint of a lead is heard in the crunchy, creaking, hypnotic melody that soon develops. At this early point we are now underwater, sinking into the depths as bubbles rise past us. The creak returns in gated force near the heart of the track as the haunting atmosphere returns to provide a subtle emotional overlay to the journey. A corny sample about marijuana provides the excuse to get even more intricate with filtered percussion, and soon sounds are bouncing all over the stereo field in an uninhibited display of production prowess. Another seductive break and the lead is back for one last cycling run through the infernal machine, leading out as the pattern reverses for an insanely good come down. Simply put, Steve Good is one of the most brilliant producers on the psytrance scene, and Hentai is a clear reason why. One may put this song on and vividly know what kind of sound is possible with modern technology. Amazing.

ManMadeMan instantly change things up with Is This Now? It's something of a groovy upbeat hip-shaker without too much going for it. I've never been a fan of the group, primarily because their productions seem so wishy-washy, and this one isn't all that different. The funk quotient is substantially increased later on, but the song fails to do much more than dabble around on the edges of interest for my taste, despite being so keen on the style. There's something funny about the ending here as well.

Safi Connection provide Do You Feel for the sixth entry. Now here's something of a quandry for me - it's a full-on psytrance track with a vocal hook that I actually enjoy. I'm guessing this might be a freak track that just happened to strike something just right, so I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone, but that disclaimer aside I think it's a solid piece of work. Big rolling digital bass line, plenty of psychedelic atmospheres, and this "do you feel the way I do" vocal that gets chopped, filtered, and extremely manipulated for the duration. Safi's usual hooks and drops are all put to good effect, and the song is seldom staying still long enough for it to be bogged down, but it always remains friendly to the dancefloor. Perhaps it is the layers that do it for me, as there are plenty of chaotic sounds dribbling and bubbling through the cracks as the song goes on. One may focus attention on any particular strata and jump from one obscure sound to the next with developing interest. The ending is somewhat abrupt, but still - this is dancefloor material, and good stuff at that.

Next, Sensient delivers a dark and brooding techtrance piece entitled Ase, in his signature style. The beats pound in a minimal fashion for several minutes before the sound of a ghost train hauntingly comes over, initiating a new percussive hook and the development of several atmospheric sounds. Sensient usually divides his songs into three movements, from the first sequences featuring the beat alone, the middle build, and then the final run at which nothing is held back. This one follows the pattern, with an growing psychedelic atmosphere developing with increasing intensity as time passes. Production quality on his more recent work is clearly far superior, but this remains a really solid piece of truly psychedelic techno.

DJ Sangeet's Psy-Fi-Stereo is something of a mediocre effort, and would have fit well on his usual home label over at Spirit Zone. The production is a little muddy, perhaps on purpose, with a groove that dabbles around without much focus. Typical progressive sounds filter in out of some alluring filter sets, and go on to waver around for a while before promptly disappearing in a new sequence. The way the bass works it almost sounds as if this was a psytrance producer's approach at making true progressive trance, and this is especially notable in one of the breakdowns. In any case, the track doesn't work so well, with the off-putting use of hi-hats and questionable inclusion of a drum roll sample that has found its way into many psytrance tunes in the last few years. Mild and inoffensive and not particularly engaging.

Electric Melon bring the beats to a close with Ectoplasmic. The sound is the hypnotic U.K. style of progressive that I might compare to the material on Dragonfly's Better Life Through Chemistry compilation, which mainly featured the work of Tristan and Youth. Much like the material on that release, I barely notice this song as it plays through, and then it's over.

Red Seal provide the finishing touch with the dub and reggae-influenced Supernatural. Previously found on Flying Rhino, it has always been something of an anomaly as to why this artist releases in the psytrance scene, but in this case there is no cause for complaint. It is completely unlike anything else here, but is nicely produced. The song features full vocals, nice effects, and a sashaying beat that chills and soothes.

DJ Pena did a decent job rounding up a wide variety of psytrance for this compilation, though I do find that many of the songs here are not that distinct. The two openers are fairly good, although they don't suit my taste. Bubble Dragon's contribution is absolutely incredible, as noted - worth the price of the CD if you see it at a bargain rate. Safi Connection provides a curiously good tune, though my appreciation of it remains a mystery I cannot fathom. Sensient delivers another dope bomb, though his later work eclipses this early effort. Finally, Red Seal provide a nice reggae finish, despite not fitting well into the context of the album flow. The rest is easily overlooked for the most part, leading this to be a fairly average compilation overall. The strong points are the diversity of sound and the small assortment of outstanding tracks to be found here, while the weak points mainly revolve round how unengaging some of the other tunes are. The cover design is really quite generic, but the running time is just over 71 minutes, leading to a higher level of value. I would recommend this mainly for collectors and bargain hunters, and any Double Dragon fans out there. Otherwise, the release has limited appeal, and is not destined to be remembered long into the future.
