i really like live.
i used to use FL but it was like looking at my music through a pinhole...
using live is like i have both eyes (and ears) open.
anything else is claustrophobic.
in live, arrangement view is your friend.

I'm learning now how to use Ableton, and this shit is weird, next to fl I mean.
That arrangement vs session view confuses the shit out of me,the fact that you have to record everything instead of just dropping notes into piano roll. The fact that each channel has clips left me wondering...
And the piano roll of Ableton, fuck,it's too damn white lol
From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)

Although I'm mostly a Cubase user I use Ableton a lot too. I started at FL studio some yrs ago...

The main thing that made me love others DAWs over the fruit thing is precisely that what was being discussed in the first posts of this thread, the loop editing and overall way to arrange clips and thus a track.

Back when I first came to this forum, someone told me FL was like heroin and the more you get into it the more it will take you to quit.

I don't want to start DAW debate because some people find FL very useful and comfortable and are able to produce professionally with it. I just don't, and I feel the way everything is structured in that DAW limits my creativity in so many ways.
Ableton in the other hand does exactly the opposite, everything in Ableton boosts my way of doing things, makes everything easier and more flexible.

Personal taste and workflow i guess... but it wasn't until I switched from FL to other DAWs that I was forced to learn and understand much more to the music / audio world rather than inserting a "Soundgoodizer" or another instance of Sytrus without understanding a thing.

I would encourage anyone to drop the FL Studio, not because I don't like it but because I think it could be hard for a user to break free from the mindset it requires which I find a little distant from the "real world of music production".

JEKVAN:
IMHO that is the only really confusing issue when learning Ableton. But you don't have to record everything you can directly create midi clips in the arrange view and drop notes into piano roll. Think of the session view as a way to play live or doodle some ideas, the production part is the arrange view tho.

Ableton is like a swiss knife, it has many uses and can be manipulated in so many ways. When starting this can be overwhelming but after a while then you just find the true magic of this DAW and its potential, that's the reason behind its popularity.

Only thing I dislike about Live is the way windows are fixed and sometimes small to my taste... also not being able to see various midi clips at once or automation lanes... still a very sweet DAW and live program.

BTW Audiosonic... I love your pic. Billy Meier story is fascinating. And about your qestion:

Can I work with Ableton just like i'm used to with larger DAWs like Sonar and Cubase?

Yes... in arrange view everything works like Cubase... just a long lane to arrange whatever you want. Understanding midi clips in Ableton takes a while tho, you can stretch them in size and they will still have an individual measure which will make them loop, if you really want to have bigger measure clips you can tweak the clip's parameters or draw a new one the size you want it (right click INSERT MIDI CLIP or Control+Shift+M if i remember right).

Holly shit I just have to say how awesome Ableton is.The automations are soooooooo much more easy. That was the thing I most hated in flstudio, and I haven't used the automation at all (I just went for LFO option ).

The bouncing is way easy. This is indeed awesome program .And the great thing is,now it is probably much more possible to collaborate with people,I am just guessing here but probably much more produces use Ableton than flstudio.

The are two things that I don't like : The keyboard,Ableton is practically makes one buy midi keyboard, the mapping is awefull for QWERTY keyboard.

Also, the automations, all the automations are straight lines,no curved lines line in flstudio. And Ableton doesn't have an option to draw LFO curve in one click (or thats just me not knowing).

This is so awesome,I dunno, the flow is just way better ,its like before I had bricks on my hands trying to draw something and now its all free . I hated the hell out of automations before, and it is sooo easy in Ableton.

Only can someone tell me now how I define my VST's in Ableton ?           From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)
