whats so special about fruity?
I messed around with version 7 but have never got too into it. I use Ableton Live as my main sequencer. Whats Fruity got that should make me consider rewiring it to Ableton. I know quite a lot of people use it as their main sequencer. Can someone pinpoint some of the things that make it special. What are some of the features that make it unique and worth buying?

- The SPEED of working once you get to know it
- the speed of working in the pianoroll. (for example little things: you drag the length of a sample (envelope) and when you click on one bar of a specific length, the next you'll create will be of the same length. hard to explain those little advantages though, you should see someone in action who is used to working in it. I had cubase and abletonlovers next to me and allthough they have their own specific advantages, they admitted some things just work faster and better in FL.
- The on the fly routing of efx where every channel can be a send or an insert. You can save & load groups of efx very easily. To give an example: imagine some groups of efx. You can use a sampler, play the sample reversed, pitch automated, stretched, in different tones, route that sample to 1 efxgroup and send it to other groups of efx in the percentage you want (30% --> efxgroup 1, 25% --> efxgr.2 which already is sidechained to etc...). All those efxgroups can be used as insertefx for other sounds too. And all of this is set up in less than 30 secs. I never saw anyone do this this fast in either cubase or ableton live.
- ...
But it has disadvantages too that's why I use it rewired to ableton. Powered plugins have delays which aren't solved automatically. Midi sucks... http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

Yeah I love the speed of use! And also so modular that you can basicly route anything to anything, and add seperate lfo's etc... But I must say that I like the mixer(for mixdown purposes, not modularity and flexibility... FL really punches there!) and sequencer of Cubase better. Rewire make loops in FL and then use in Cubase seem to be my solution.
I find that my tracks sound fatter and generally better when mainly produced in Cubase rather than FL. There seems to be more punch and rounder sound, while FL leaves me with a more hollow sound.... anyone any inputs on this?
Is the soundengine of FL8 improved vs version 7?

Yeah, Fl was always a bit on the hollow end as far as sound quality is concerned, which is why I mix down in Pro Tools. I have always liked fruity simply for it's intuitive interface which has enabled a smooth and fast workflow. Now that I can export my rendered stuff 24 bit it should be better. They also announced that the sound quality supposedly is greatly improved in FL 8. I will download it and start playing with it as soon as I get some time...

Am I the only one not hearing this? I think it's mainly a volume issue. You have to monitor volumes of samples more closely than in other programs. But if I run a vsti in ableton/cubase to me it gives the same sound as in FL.
btw Magnus: will upload stuff this week! Sorry for the delay... greetz my friend

Yep i agree. Mostly a volume/panning law issue i guess.

100 % agree !
The quality of FL studio is exactly the same as in Cubase...te only diffrence may be the volume and the panning type or settings !

Differences in panning law or volume will not degrade audio quality in a floating point system....sure it might make subtle differences in level, but that's not the issue many people complain about.
There was some test done here that showed that in FL each track added some noise, so that when you mix many tracks your dynamic range started to get severely reduced.
That was a while ago, and maybe they have fixed that issue in subsequent versions.
But it does correlate to my experience with FL and for example Orion and blind tests I made comparing the sound of different sequencers.
Some 3-4 tracks sounds fine, but when you get above eight or so tracks things start turning into a mush easily.
It's a very puzzling subject since developers many times tell you that it is simple addition and the only difference in sound should be the panning law.
But a lot of producers claim that for example FL and Reason will sound inferior when mixing many tracks and resort to rewiring to get good sound.

When was this tested? Back in the 3.5.6 days? I always thought it sounded muddy back in those days, now I realize it was me sounding muddy. These days I never get frustrated by the soundquality. Use good plugins, render at highest quality and you don't hear a difference. Again a reason for the assumed muddyness is bad rendering/recording. If you 'just' render and leave all the volumes as they are in the samplers, your mix tends to get more silent at the time and thus more muddy. Pay attention to this from the beginning, use audio clips instead of samplers when possible (for some reason volume control on those are better I experienced) and you will have no trouble at all soundwise.
