Fruity used to be frowned upon because of earlier versions that weren't very versatile.
Meanwhile with releases such as FL6 and FL7 things have changed a lot. I use a combo of Fl Studio 7 (and I am very happy with it) and Pro Tools 7.3 !
The only thing bugging me in FL is that there are still automation parameters that won't work with external software, such as Native Instruments. On that front Logic seems to be the leader... Other than that, fruity works great and pretty much has all I need, including synths like Sytrus...

I love and use FL for the sound creating. It's great (for someone used to it) to jam around and create new sounds, beats, drums, ect... It's great for the creativity and for playing around to get the idea of the arrangment of a song. But most of my tracks finished in FL (3years old songs) are very crappy.
Usually I use acid pro to arrange all the loops and to do most of the loop sample editing for a full length track (mostly applying effects to a couple of bars of a song, raises, etc.)
I also use some stand alones (like amplitube, I just can't make the vst version capture the guitar sound from line-in 2) and record the audio routing the sounds thru my mixing table. These samples are also glued in to the song with acid.
After everything is done, Sound Forge comes in and I master the track.
So (for me) although fl is a great program, I use several programs at a time.
It's all about comfortability. As long as you can make that sound thats flowing thru your brain, it really doesn't matter how you do it.

I will be releasing a full album by the end of this year completely made in FL6&7. My label doesn't even know I work in FL. They think I produce in cubase & besides: like they care or ask... What does it matter when it sounds ok? I have to say my final mix was done in cooledit2000 (another oldskool kiddy program ).
I'm not saying FL is better, probably not, no surely not but if you don't fel restrained by it, why change to another program? Because the general opinion is that FL is kiddy?
For playing live it sucks (imo) and indeed it sucks that you can't automate some plugins. But as for rapid putting ideas into sounds it rocks! And that's the part about music making I like so much so...

LOL, have you actually tried to fiddle around with it for more than 10 minutes ?
FL may be a lot of bad things but it definetely isn't a kids toy or limited.
You know, things we write in this forum usually influence peoples opinions so it would be better if we have a more in depth knowledge of stuff before going out bashing

Banderlog, I haven't performed live yet, but I think I've got a good workflow down that would allow me a lot of control of my sounds in real-time. The Live Mode in FL 7 is also quite intuitive.
Greententacle: Thanks for the compliment. Appreciated muchly. |

Yeah, well I should have said it sucks to play live...for me. My projects are all on the verge of 100%cpu, mostly around 60-80% with peaks so I can't trust it to play live. The midi assignments in ableton are way better too imo so I go for ableton. Though indeed you/I could do a lot more live tweaking in FL. But I wonder: if you go live and you play several projects: how do you load them up in FL? I tried the same approach I use in Ableton: rendering songs in several large wavfiles but in FL it just consumes all the memory very fast. My livesets are about 4-6gb of wavs and I can never ever load those into FL but I can load them into ableton. It depends on your workflow indeed. If you manage to limit the amount of vst(i)'s and long wavs in your liveset then it could be possible. I started out playing live in FL. I played one song in FL and loaded the third song in FL while playing the second in cooledit but that was just a horrible way of working.

I'd make a project specifically for playing live. I'd bounce down each of my tracks without the elements I'd play live, so I'd be left with bass, percussion and maybe some pads and other leads. Then I'd import each backing track into an FL project, line them up so they flow seamlessly into each other, than open the VSTs I'd need to trigger melody patterns and other parametres when they need to be played in the mix...I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like it'd work.
I'm working on a 4 track demo now, so a live performance might be half my stuff and half a DJ set, in which case I could play one of my tracks then mix in another artist's track while I setup the next project in FL. If that makes sense. |

FL on the whole is a great software to make psychedelic trance. I've been using it or a while now. FL 6 mainly and its user friendly interface makes it easy for a newbie to understand how to use the software.
I'd like to shift to FL 5 because of the famous CPU saving option. Just that I'd like to get back to my FL 6 projects every now and then. Btw, there's no real solution to that - is there?

I used fruity loops for as long as i can remember (maybe 3-4 years) but i could never do everything that i wanted....
Like get a good mix for example,
but anyway, when i started producing psy-trance, I felt that fruity loops was way too limiting. I could never make a track that I was 100% happy with. The day I moved to cubase I swore to never go back, but I still use a range of different DAWs for diferent uses.
I always try to use programs that i havent used in ages like reason and FL, but i really have not found anything in either that Cubase SX3, Logic or Pro Tools can do ALOT better.
The sound quality in my honest opinion, really does not cut it. I havent used FL7 extensivley, but I didnt notice much diference in terms of the Sound engine.
In terms of the CPU power being saved, It just means that the program isnt working hard enough ;P
My 2 cents...

I got FL7 installed but I don't use it at all, it is just too different for me comparing to more traditional sequencers such as Logic, Cubase and Cakewalk, for me, Cubase is GREAT!
I actually wish I could master Cakewalk 6, it has the most potential to have a really good sound quality, all the 64bit engine, its heaven.
For me, Cubase SX3 is the chosen, but I will definetly will look deep into Cakewalk 6, for 2008 and 2009, I will start working on 96khz tracks, 32 and 64 bit.

yeah well, exactly as I thought would be a great plan too but just try it. Maybe you'll cut it with 4 tracks but when you're talking 2 hours live acts of 20+ tracks each split up in 4-6 24bit wavs, FL doesn't do the job very well, I can assure you.
