FL Studio 7 - Why the bad rap?

I actually haven't seen a thread devoted to this sequencer, but I'm wondering why exactly FL is somewhat frowned upon? I've been using it since version 5, since about 2 years ago, and while the earlier versions were more suited towards amatuer bedroom production, FL 7 really seems to have grabbed the attention of professionals. The new version offers track based sequencing, as well as a pattern based and the sound engine has been re-worked. Compared to Reason, I think the fact that FL offers VST support makes it far more flexible. I really haven't found any other software that has such an intuitive and inviting workflow, but I guess that if I'd been using Cubase for 2 years I'd feel the same about it.

I remember Premiere, the video editing software, was also seen as a kind of non-serious, beginners only software. Now with later versions, it's become pretty serious stuff and the BBC are beginning to use Premiere exclusively.

Are there any producers here who've actually delved right into FL studio, and spent more than a couple of weeks scratching the surface with it?

I'm using FL exclusively for about 5+ years now.

Can't say enough good things about it.

One thing i like about it is the fact that it's very light on the CPU, I've enormous projects running on a single cpu 2.1 machine with loads of VSTs working at the same time.

I also love the FL Sampler and some of the FXs it has: it's one of the main reasons i don't switch to Cubase.           roll a joint or STFU :)

Sy, that's awesome. Have any of your tracks been published, have you played live with FL as a DAW? Give me some details, man. I'm using FL 7 and would like to break through into getting my work published, even by a small net-label, but fear that no one takes an FL producer seriously.

there is tons of fruity loops music on netlabels and labels everywhere...

i like it as a secondary sound design and ideas program next to another daw personally

FL wont hold you back, i'm sure.

As faxinadu said, there's loads of respected producers using FL, doing releases and playing live.

If you sound good, you will be taken seriously           roll a joint or STFU :)

My first solo album was made in FL 6.
The new album coming out at the end of this year is made also 100 % in FL 7.

I have aswell a maxi Cd (my "classical music" side project named "Ravana") made in FL 7 who was recently licesed by Media Services (Sony Music sublab.)

This ideea with "labels don't take you seriously if you work in FL" it's fake.
Nobody give a shit what you use as long as it sounds good...maybe only the frustrated artists, with bad results. lol
          NEW ALBUM OUT SOON !!!

i also use fl studio and i love it. and thats the point, its about what makes you feel comfortable. in the end, all that matters is WHAT you have done and not HOW you have done it. by now i did not find anything i could not do with fls. but i guess it is also just a matter of wich sequencer you first got in touch with. a friend of mine changed from cubase to fls though....

rock on

I used fruity for the first year, but I swapped it then for logic...

its already 3-4years back that I used fruity last time, but it was great to get into all that and do some easy stuff in short time

I mainly switched cause fruity didnt have automation back then (I think), hyperdraw, as good midi editing possibilities as logic, and the overall environment of logic was better for me

now I'm more with faxi on that subject...maybe I'll use it one time again rewired, but I wouldnt go for it again now as a main daw

but thats defenately about taste, and like I said, I dont really now about the new versions of fruity since I had no chance yet to check them

90% of my "soundscool" was made on fruity 5 and 6
still didnt explore 7 properly , but im sure they keep improve (is offline process there yet at all?)

beside , whats better guitar or chello ?
its funny to think sequencer is sequencer is sequencer. fruity i can make in 5 minutes what Q takes me 2 hours or even 2 days sometimes , while others might expirience it exacly oposite.
i make completly diffrent tunes with diffrent programs , due to specialy the options , native synths , audio engine (what i find diffrent not exacly better and worse) etc.

so i do believe its very personal thing , work with whatever sound better and feel more fun to work with.

Fruity used to be frowned upon because of earlier versions that weren't very versatile.

Meanwhile with releases such as FL6 and FL7 things have changed a lot. I use a combo of Fl Studio 7 (and I am very happy with it) and Pro Tools 7.3 !

The only thing bugging me in FL is that there are still automation parameters that won't work with external software, such as Native Instruments. On that front Logic seems to be the leader... Other than that, fruity works great and pretty much has all I need, including synths like Sytrus...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:
