if "first" means affordable (<150 €) i would take a look at AKAI MPK MINI / M-AUDIO OXYGEN / NOVATION NOCTURN

novation and akai are both bomb choices.

pros of the novation: automap right at the start of your producing could be fun, they are cheap and their support is decent, LED screens are awesome....

pros of the akai: build like tanks, feel great to use, the knobs/sliders/pads feel "pro" quality... oh, and ableton integration for certain items.

i own both. my novation is a great studio controller, but live... akai wins. hell, i could savagely beat a potention gear-thief with my Akai APC40 immediately before getting on stage with it.           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

Doesn't have keys, but an APC40 is a solid choice.

Do you know how to play keys already? If you're making trance music you don't really need a keyboard...most of the shit is programmed in anyways.

If I was starting out from scratch again I'd probably get a first gen iPad and a korg nanocontrol. With TouchAble you get keys/drumpads, all the triggering/touch shit you could dream of and you have the nanocontrol for the physical knobs you need for mixing.

The Novation SL MK2 range is great but NO WHERE near the build quality and ease of use as well as feature rich as the Akai MPK.

I own both by the way.

Where are you from? What DAW do you use? ww.jrrshop.com does 10% off stuff, if you use 10off coupon code.

If you use Ableton Live as your DAW, I would recommend the Akai stuff as well. Don't like Novation as much, the build quality is not great, but Remote Mapping is good.

Allow you to assign various midi parameters to available knobs or pads on your controller for automation etc.. Basically transferring midi data to a midi enabled device. And then there's the liberty of easily writing melodies and patterns with keys which, in my opinion, is much easier and less time consuming than using a mouse.

hope I set that out correctly.
