Hey soooo after a year or so of work, I finally got an invite to play out at my very first party! Really excited, and fairly confident that it is going to be really kickass, but I want to make sure that I have 300% of my bases covered and do everything in my power to make sure it goes smoothly.

My gear:

PC - ASUS i5, super stable
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220868

Soundcard - Presonus 2x2 USB Audiobox
http://www.presonus.com/products/detail.aspx?productid=53

MIDI Controller - Akai APC 40 w/ Isotonik 6 template
http://www.akaipro.com/apc40

Software - Ableton Live 8.2.1

That is all I need in order to plug in to a mixer, yes? the 1/4" TRS? I know (or think I know) that in order to have the ability to hear your CUE through your headphones you need a soundcard with two outputs, yes? Not really important to me right now as I don't beatmatch manually and I won't be using the in-house mixer.

but yeah, I'm showing up a couple hours before the show to soundcheck my gear to make sure everything works well...also going to burn a backup CD of the stuff I intend to play in case shit goes south...though I really don't think it will.

any advice/additional precautions?

Thanks isratrance, without this forum I would not be in the position I am now! Ready to get people dancing

Glad to hear. Sounds like you've got all your bases covered.

Stay sober (even if you practice in a different state, it's best to be sober incase something goes wrong), stay relaxed and have fun. The only real performance advice I can offer is to remember to look up at the crowd every so often (or just when you don't need to be looking at your computer/controller) cause it's fun to watch everyone dance to what you're playing and it looks weird to see a dj with their face buried in their computer the whole time. Also, remember to dance too, one of the best ways to get in rhythm with the crowd           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

thanks for the tips yeah I am going to try to strike a balance between doing lots of fun/interesting stuff with the gear and being involved in the crowd's energy...and definitely going to dance up a storm! I love when DJs dance to what they're playing...gets me into it much easier....

all the best on the djing

stay focus and enjoy..do not get to nervous if things do not work the way you want at start, in time you will get things the way you want them to be..do not loose your concentration, and above all, try to see the crowds reaction

best of lucks, and tell how did it went

I think as long as:

1) I don't hit the 'stop all clips button'
2) I don't change the 'launch clip' quantization to triplets
3) I don't accidentally change the tempo to 20, or 999
4) I get to smile + dance, and see other people smiling and dancing

I will be ok thanks for the lucks!            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Nice man!
All the best to you!

Don't worry about making mistakes. It happens to everybody. Just make a joke about it if you do make a mistake. Making a mistake can even work in your advantage if its a funny one. Putting the volume on 11 does not fall in that category, but changing the tempo to 999 might

good luck!           soundcloud.com/supergroover

wow that was really fun Aside from a slight stage setup delay and one transition that was not very smooth volume-wise, I was very happy with my performance and the dance floor had a great time!

Venue was cool, it was on a college campus inside of a native american longhouse - small crowd - and I was the only psy dj??? even though it was a psy party, had some cancellations or something so I went on at 1:00AM after a DNB DJ and before a chiptunes DJ...

Totally awesome though, danced my ass off and can't wait to do it again            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe
