Artist : Fiord
Title : Zephyr EP
Label : Sprout
Format : Digital
Release date : Oct 09

Tracklist :

1/ Zephyr (original mix)
2/ Zephyr (Fergie remix)

New Zealand does not know it –yet– but Aotearoa boasts some of the finest electronic music producers that this new century has to offer. However, those that are in the known have already knighted Fiord — the magnificent musical brotherhood of Barton & Hayden Strom, of Antix fame (no need to recall that in the future, I guess); their recent production has been covered with accolades by international critics, DJs, and dance floors alike. Fiord’s irresistible ascencion of the Mordor (Ngarahoe) of Techno parallels the rise of Minilogue, that other famous duo which outgrew its trancey origins, and, after an initial frolic with electro-house, eventually evolved into an ongoing Techno love story.
After being featured in the Iboga, Flow Vinyl, Open, Bus, Blue Tunes and Tribal Vision catalogues, a significant step forward was made with a few stunning remixes for Perfect Stranger, Beckers & Hatfield and Animaltek, soon followed by releases on Evapour8, and a Global Underground signing. Recently, Dave Seaman took Fiord into the warmth of his Audio Therapy embrace for two still fresh-off-the-grill prime cut rmxs. Now it’s international jetsetter D-Nox’s turn to host Fiord on his Sprout imprint for a second release.

1/ Zephyr (original mix)
Relentless, shuffling rhythms; subterranean bassline; hypnotic glass and bell chimes; spine-tingling transposes; tormented and insinuating little synth lines: all of these ingredients boil and bubble to give off a dark, surging atmosphere. Zephyr might owe its name and originality to the inflating motif that resembles a twisting, whirling gust of wind or... a convention of toads on LSD. The rather dark overtones and hoarse riffs don’t prevent this track from shining like a gem, on the contrary. This is another brilliant piece of music from the Kiwi maestros, with a rich and complex sound palette, and a dancefloor friendly focus. All the while remaining highly trippy material.

2/ Zephyr (Fergie rmx)
UK Techno master Fergie, with countless releases on the biggest labels (Craft, Great Stuff, 1605, Tronic, Excentric Muzik, Global Underground...), was an inspired choice for the rmx of this one. His affinity with the original is obvious, and he hits the spot. He stays very close to the seminal track, but introduces a slightly more galloping approach, while transforming it into a lower key affair. The reverberated bell chime and filtered hi-hat effects accentuate the techy atmosphere, while the ominous, surging motifs, at once grotesque and nerve-racking, sound like the collision between a demented formula 1 racing car and the intial travelling sequence of Kubrick’s ‘Shining’.

Bottom line
A regular feature in D-Nox’s sets, this package is an essential contribution to the Fiord soundscape, and a wonderful DJ tool. Both mixes are must-have. And there is more in the pipeline...
