After a summer break, Pena´s Flow Vinyl are back and they mean business. Their latest offering is a dark and mysterious percussive monster that goes straight for the jugular. The tribal-tinged ‘Kopi Hitam’ is a collaboration between Fiord, Tim Richards and Joel Armstrong, and yet again shows that Flow Vinyl are ahead of the pack in pushing new music.
Fiord has been behind the label’s last two releases as one half of Triangle and this time he’s joined forces with fellow New Zealander Tim Richards and Canadian Joel Armstrong. Both these two have built up an impressive list of productions over the last couple of years, so teaming up with Fiord was the perfect combination. ‘Kopi Hitam’ is proper lights out material built on layers of percussion and eerie effects. Throw in the distorted vocals and you have a deliciously rich and sensual track that oozes hot, sticky nights.
Remix action comes from Brazilian Gabe who has worked with the likes of D-Nox & Beckers and stripes the track down to its raw essentials for a deep and funk-laden reworking. Belgium’s Hermanez, meanwhile, proves why he’s one of the most talked about new names in electronic music with a typically sophisticated tech house bomb.
Finish it all off with a ‘Decaf’ dub mix from the guys themselves that has a lighter, summery feel and you have the perfect package. Kopi Hitam is also a blend of black coffee, by the way, and this is an equally stimulating musical adventure.
Flow Vinyl are back and they have plenty more dancefloor bombs waiting in the wings.
