You could use a spectrum analyzer.
Pinguin jumpe to mind, its an expensive toy but really quite accurate, although there are loads out there.
Link to Pinguin, i beleive they have a fully functional demo.

i would think it made like eq
so mid position would be 1k , double ratio going up?
doesnt really sound that way tho with some synths..
about find the exact freq , train alot with dry signals with tone generator to learn them by ear and not by eye www.sattelbattle.com

Obviously knowing any freq by ear is extremely difficult but its by far the best way, agh if you only had perfect pitch, but using a spectrum analyzer will help in this process, i wasnt advocating learning by sight, just use it as a tool to start your process, learning by sight would just be......rediculous

yeah, tracking resonance peak on analyser sounds like good idea
the idea is to play some melodies with resonance in higher harmonics-(timbre or whateva) of some sounds, but will try it soon to see if that walks
thanks to all

If you're really set on finding the exact frequency i would use a spectrum analyzer and a tuner.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

yeah i'm using this tuner http://www.gvst.co.uk/gtune.htm , but it have restriction to some point in range that cant read over few thousands of hertz soo he cant read higher freq peaks...
i also remember that one freq analyser have the dot(small circle) that glues on highest peak automaticaly when mouse cursor comes near it and reads that freq but i can't remember which one was it
