Ive actually read a few threads while searching for a pedal saying how a distortion unit adds alot of extra un needed noise. Kinda sounds like extra feedback like buzzing Im guessing?
So you like the M-104 then. Do you notice it killing accents? Thats the one Im looking at right now. That or the Boss OS-2. I did find a Boss DS-1 for $30 so maybe try it out. Not sure if its even a good unit tho |

It's not really killing the accents imho.
Although you loose a bit of the low-end as you increase the amount of distortion.
So that could be responsible for the accents to loose maybe a bit of bite.
But I'm also looking at the Boss distortion, maybe I'm getting this one as well, just to compare which one I like better. |

+ 1 it work good on synths and it can be the best limiter ever (not in a mastering context but for taming peaks on some individual synth sounds )
but have to say Nectarios have similar sound out of the proco rat , sound great too for less money..but the cv can probably do more, better spec, subbtle warming to 99% thd ... price is justified imo |

Sound Toys Decapitator has two modes that emulate CV
Not half as good, but still works, sometimes.
+1 for Pro Co Rat 1 & 2
Those are some wicked pedals. Good on synths too.

I'd take the Culture Vulture over my cheap guitar pedals any day of the week...but you can't compare them, the CV is so much more as a distortion unit and its price reflects that.
The good thing about the cheap guitar pedals is that they do one type of sound very well...an that is it. that is why you need more than one to cover a larger range of distortion sounds.
The ProCo RAT nails that biting 303 accent sound, whereas the Big Muff tames the full resonance, high cut off settings, which is what you want in some cases.
Both pedals are very cheap and well worth the cash though.
Peace out.
