This question is about a preset or application that will maximize the desired sound in a sample while ignoring unwanted background artifacts. I suppose it's mostly EQ and noise gate, correct? Compression would only magnify unwanted portions of the signal true?
I normally use E-MU's patch mix dsp preset "social hall" which has the effect of "focusing" the main sounds while minimizing background noise and music. Thereby getting a fairly good sample off the recorded take which hopefully makes for fewer edits.
I'd like to set up a preset in Forge or Audition, but I think the settings would always depend on the frequency of the sampled audio, no? My limited knowledge tells me: noise gate > notch eq around desired Hz > maximize signal.

That seems like something that is alright... There have only been a couple of times where I have had to clean up the audio to a sample and I typically used the restoration bundle from waves to do so and then maximized it afterwards... How are you recording your movie samples? I have found that you get a little bit less outside noise by ripping the audio file directly from the DVD rather than recording the audio through the soundcard...
