Filteria makes a distinct, incedibly fat, wide, driving bass sound that sounds huge without taking up a lot of space in the mix. it sounds quite different from usual fullon bass which, although not sounding as fat imho, often leaves comparatively little space in the mix for melodic elements (that are more than abundant in filteria's music).

how does he do it? thb i haven't done much experimentation and bass isn't one of my favourite things in music production, but i've been wondering about any tricks filteria may use for quite some time now. do you guys have any idea?

some examples:

(starts around 1:30)

(at around 1:20 and still works nicely in melodic parts at 6:30)

(starts around 0:20)

well.. i HAVE done a lot of experimentation.. and bass is one of my favorite things..

nice tunes..

one of the things that is apparent is that it's not just a constant 16th note driving bassline like in fullon.. it still maintains that feel, but it doesn't have the low bass note machine gunning away. in the first two tunes, he has a low bass note that plays sparsely, and then one octave above that has a bit more notes playing.. also, this is filtered lower than a lot of fullon i've heard. i also hear some chorus, at least on those high notes. sounds like mostly saws though.

i had feared that layering would be involved
thanks for your post, that gives me a starting point. i guess i'll report back tomorrow night when i've played around with that for a while.

i've tried around some and multiple osc's with stereo spread and some chorus has gotten me close enough for my purposes (well, at least for the high notes), thanks guys.

one thing i would like you to consider: filteria likes to use many synths, tones and melodies overlapping to eachother to perceive a sense of "big" or dimensional, layering.

try to imagine water - while in the big picture everything seems to be one, in detail every single movement of surface creates another wave for the next generation, and so on and on... while movements deeper down are more heavy, longer, and worse noticable(bass, or lower tones/notes), the ones close to surface are fast, glitchy and repetetive(like synths, percussion).

try to imagine these movements as your filters, chorus, delay, what ever you want. just dont forget, to put it in the big picture. it has to flow like water.

Imo there are 2 points getting fat sounds like filteria:
1. Using some old analog synth for doing this job
2. Use the Mackie 32/8 console (you can hear the typically eq`s of his mixing desk in the Filteria sounds).

The Mackie 32/8 is not a great sounding desk. I know so because I was using one for 3 years and compared its signal to other outboard channel strips and direct SPDIF recording.

Peace out.

Mostly the thing with adding more channels and uping gains when the input signal is not hot enough. Obviously careful gain structure will help any mix, but if you deliberately push this desk to get "its sound" it sounds like you mix crashed into a big lot of kitchen pans

I don't think Filterias bass is tight at all, its this wholly hint of bottom end that feels like its an extension of the overflowing lead lines, which for this kind of music is the "right" thing to do, but his basslines are not the strongest link in his music. The free running oscillators add motion to the bassline, but its not tight to get a constant bottom end. Its all down to taste anyway. I used to swear by free running osc basslines as well.

Peace out.

OK, there are better consoles.
But the price/sound ratio very good.
Back in the 90ies a lot of good
albums were made with the Mackie, Prodigy, Hallucinogen...
I don`t think that it sound plastic, if you know how you can get very good sound out of it.Not only good eq`s, I like the sound of the microphone preamps for fattening my vsti`s and hardware synths...
I don`t want to miss mine...
But I would change it for a Neve or SSL...

Its good to throw the outputs of your soundcard and do as much summing as you can on a decent analog desk. There has been much talk about it and it was a couple of years ago before the new versions of Logic, Cubase...etc came out, that the summing outside the box is always better.
Dunno how much people that make DAWs have addressed this issue nowdays and even tho I could easily say that mixing in Logic 8 yields a much more "open" sound than mixing in Logic 5, I haven't done a test to actually prove anything to my self...on top of that my mixes sound a lot better now that I am mixing in the box, than when I was mixing on the Soundcraft Spirit Studio 8 and Mackie 32 8 Buss. Which again has more to do with me being more experienced than I was back then when I was refusing to use any sort of plug in besides, delay.

Peace out.
