So what do you think, does a bassline with many different notes sound better when you have keytracking (filter frequency follows note frequency), or not (filter stays always at the same place, even when notes get higher).

Hmm I believe the filter mod envelope is way more crucial in the bassline power and tone than keytrack - but a big of keytrack can make the bassline a little more dynamic           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

if you feel like your higher notes are to dark and could use a bit more highs, then yes, by all means...

but it depends a lot, even just for bass. depends on the range of notes you're playing. depends on the range of modulation you've set for the filter (filt env), if it's all the way then it's probably not necessary. if it's not, then it might be a good idea to apply some keytrack to filter.

another way to look at it would be: the initial position of filter cut off is like where it lands after the snappy movement. maybe that's ok for the lower notes and not so much for the higher ones, 'cause you might need a bit more harmonics on that one... you know, when a note that's supposed to be bright sounds artificially dark because filter is cutting a lot... make some rapidly changing pattern, with a offbeat note jumping an octave up, then some more note changes and tweak this carefully, then A/B results... I sometimes use it myself, but usually not.

Massive's got a pretty impressive implementation of this, btw. and like how you can set the root note on the Virus to. worth checking it out.
