What's your thoughts about file-sharing/illegal downloads?
Is it acceptable, or should we be supporting our psytrance artists by buying their incredible music?

There's been a few high-profile prosecutions lately, and recent news would point to something of a clampdown in the near-future.

That's a tough subject.

Althought their not making money, MP3 is the best way to spread your work through the world, for free.

So IMO, spread it in MP3 format (shitty quality), so people can get more familiar with the artists.
Then, they can pick whatever they really liked, and buy it. Which will not work like that, but anyway.

Another bad thing, is that we rarelly enjoy an album as a HOLE. We like a few tracks, even in compilations.

So, I guess it's a bad thing, that comes for GOOD in the end.

But that's just me right???

Interesting topic. Let's see what comes buy.

Regards!

the real bottom line, is that releases rarely make an artist a living. The real income comes from playing live.

But to me, ripping and sharing a track is like taking a joint from someone at a party, who was probably going to share, then passing it all over the party. Now, if the joint-person wants to share the thing with everyone, thats his choice, NOT the person next in the rotation. I know a few producers and label heads, who are by far NOT rockstars, NOT rich, riding the bus to get around the country, nearly broke. I feel its just respectful to buy their stuff, if you really like it.           .

Well, me myself disguss all the release groups shit, releasing albums for free to the net without asking the artist's permition. But there is also another side. First of all, do you really think all the ppl that never buy albums and only downloading would have bought them if they weren't come to the net? I really doubt it. Plus for me as a buyer it's a big risk to buy an album without listening to it first. And i aint talking about 1-2 minutes samples, you can't know by those demos if the album worth buying or not, and i had not so few times which i bought an album only cause it was released on a label i like or to an artist i like, and i was very disappointed of it and regreted i bought it and went to sell it but in half price cause it's already second hand. So yes, i do download music and if i like it i defenatly buy it, and from this point of view i think there is nothing wrong with it, the ppl that don't buy will never buy it even if it wasn't in the net, and those who does buy can safetly order it without guessing if they'll like it or not. I aint talking about those scums that pays money for faster internet connection and bigger hardrive space, but complain cds are "expensive", they are shitty lamers. And the thing with albums get to the net before they get on sale at shops it's the artist/label problem, they should have keep the music to themselves and not giving it to their friends or whatever, so they can only blame themselves.
And one more thing. On the cd review section, a lot of reviews had multiple pages even more than 10, which makes me really doubt all of those ppl bought it, probably downloaded it, so pls ppl don't fucking act like you're respecting the artists only by saying it's "Killer" (the most stupid word ever), show them you're respect and go buy it if you think it's such a good album.

ok first off- whomever said that releases are only for promotion- please stop repeating this.
its simply not true... maybe for some people sometime but thats not a mantra...

second- i see some SERIOUSLY fucked up shit when i see stuff like www.psyshop.ru where people put up ripped music and actually have the balls to SELL IT like its theirs to sell!!!!
the gall! the nerve! why i oughta...
i guess they dont make many sales tho...?
most people will just download it for free?

anyway- however much you download
BUY the good stuff. the stuff you like.
what you want to support.

i feel the same about cracked software- obviously theres tons going around- so ok. get an educational version of cubase- and buy some plugins if you can- the ones you really use...
those people who made it deserve it...
obviously everyone is checking stuff out...
but we shouldn't get so spoiled that we feel ENTITLED to the fruits of anothers labor...
thats just being a corsair, pirate, raider, plundering barbarian, etc...

balance people...

also you get the cool cover art and wav quality sound that is NECESSARY if you are a DJ for example...
(who wants to hear mp3 dj's anyway?)

i think it's ok.
otherwise you are trying to put a limit onto the internet, you are trying to take the freedom of whatever it is of the internet. that's just wrong,at least for now, when i die you shut the internet out and control everything.
I mean all my knowledge about music, and big part of what i hear i have to say thanks to the internet that provide me that,i prefer download songs and enjoy them, not downlaod and not knowing and not enjoying is just not me.
Buying for me is not the easy option,i mean i live in a place that once or twice we had a international apresentation so you are trying to tell me that i shouldn't download?
Is very easy for someone who got the connections and the songs say to another not to download. It takes money, the money here is not as valuable as the money on europe, and cds? You can say im wrong but i dont buy a cd in a long time, not proud of that but is the fact.

What is more important more dope or more people enjoying your song? thats a retorical question i dont want to hear the real answer...
lol

^^^hehehe... yes it did make sense mate... and i agree with u to a degree... in india there are no stores where u can purchase Psy CDs over the counter. Its all thru the internet. and thats very very expensive.. the delivery charges itself work out to almost the price of the cd... which I feel makes the whole "buying the original cd" routine just not worth it...

I download music for sure.. and i dont purchase most of the CDs that i hear. but if i come across any music which i really like, i do buy the original... in anyc ase, nowadays there are hardly any good releases anymore, so buying is not an option...           What is weed? You are not the only people who live in third world countries, who have to pay large amounts of money to get cd's, and still make a living with a third world salary.

because of that issue is that we said hey... let's just drop the cd's and start selling music online at resonable pricess, while everyone gets their share to continue afloat.

Could there possibly be a direct correlation between lack of sales and the decline of 'quality' in music in our scene?

I think services like beatport are helping tackle the fact that you only get 2 good tracks on a 15 dollar cd... what ideally i see happening, as bandwith speeds increase, and with storage space on hard drives etc gettting bigger all the time, is that more labels will go this route of making single tracks available for download through beatport or the itunes store whatever...

1 dollar to a dollar fifty cents, i think is pretty reasonable for a single track in WAV, available for download... i hope more and more labels start using beatport or similar services as a major channel of distribution. theres no transport/delivery costs, apart from bandwith which is cheap now... even at a 512 connection if u put a cd to download in wav it would have it dony by the time your home from work the next day.. take that fedex...

lol

I don't get it, you ppl have money for a computer and a fast internet connection, but you don't have money to buy cds? not even once a month? one in 2 months? you're talking about it like it's so expensive you need to take a loan on the black market or something so you can afford it. In the worse scenerio it costs 20$ including shipping payment, and if you think it's "so" expensive find soem friends that will buy albums also and put an order together so you can divided the price of the shipment and it will be chiper. But saying you never buy albums because of that is just a lame excuse.           "My single one to cross the ways that have heart, any way that has heart. Same old discussion with the same lame excuses from people that have no idea what they are talking about and are trying to find excuses about non excusable things and actions.

People dont buy music simply because they can get it for free through their super duper computers and ultra fast ADSL lines. And not just that but most of them laugh at the people who buy original music and even call them stupid in public from time to time.

All the excuses about expensive cd prices, taxes, internet freedom, fear of credit card use, artists that make a living from gigs so they dont need to sell cds, lack of cd shops in the area, testing before buying, labels that dont pay their artists so why the people should buy cds from the labels, bad distribution, third world countries and bright new galaxies are just a bunch of stupid statements, some more some less.

The same people that are stealing music are the ones that today download movies instead of renting them from their local Blockbuster or DVD Shop. You see 1-2 dollars to rent a movie is still too expensive when you can download it for free...

I just hope that one day in some years from now (4-5 years from now the way i see it) people will realise what is the damage they are doing in the music/movies/whatever industry by not supporting their everyday hobbies.

You can milk the cow every day all day but you got to feed her from time to time otherwise she will die and the music industry is dying and on a fast pace.

Keep on downloading mates, its easy, its free and its funny, just keep upgrading those ADSL lines....
