file corruption in cubase SX?

.. has anyone ever had the following? :

i have a tune which was working fine before the weekend.... when i just tried to reopen it in cubase, none of the VSTis were loaded. I got the 'pending connections' dialog, and when i hit F11 I get no instruments showing up. The weird thing is :

1) it is only with this tune,
2) problem happens with versions going back several days (i save under a different filename each day), but works again if i go back 3 or 4 days

it is very bad for me cos the tune is now bsically lost (except for a rendered version which is not really good enough)...

Maybe there is a setting which i have changed in the recent files by mistake? (*hope*)

Jon the way I try to avoid this kind of problem is always make backup to the backup to the backup and form a 'tree' of former lives of the track so if shit hits the fan I always can go back to previous session and if the shit becomes too hard i come back 5 steps           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

yup : what i have learnt from this is that it might be a good idea to back up in a _different folder_ to the original.... in fact ideally on a different drive.

The fact is I was mostly backing up as a kind of 'undo' feature.... this is the first time i have needed a backup to recover from data loss.....

Luckily it is not the end of the world in this case : i recovered the Battery percussion setup from an earlier version, and EQing it again is proving to be enjoyable I also remembered how Id done the main melody (its a morning tune) which was the thing i was most concerned about.... phew!

I am still thinking that it is probably HDD corruption.... - the exact files worked fine last week, and earlier versions (actually from a month ago, I was wrong in my previous post) still work fine.

hullo....

just thought Id update this thread... just in case anyone finds a similar problem at some stage.

I still dont know what was causing the problem, but it does seem to be well known, or at least similar problems ...

[see e.g.

I did manage to work around it.... if I copy the offending file over to my laptop, load it into cubase, then it works fine on the laptop. If I then copy it back to the desktop then it works fine again on the desktop (i.e. it's fixed!!)

When I installed the roomverb m2 on my laptop then the problem suddenly appeared on my laptop (no intruments appeared in the vst instruments window). When I uninstalled it everything was ok again.

I _dont_ think it was the fault of the roomverb though (i have it on my desktop and it hasnt caused probs in the past), but perhaps it is more a matter of 'too many plugins' or 'too much memory used' or somthing general like that.... who knows.

anyway this is all with cubase sx 1.x..... maybe all bugs will be fixed in 2.x !! hmmm

oh well anyway i am happy cos my tune is rescued (actually _tunes_ cos the problem has recurred several times).

[edit: after all this i tried uninstalling the roomverb on my desktop - all files now load fine (except for a missing roomverb of course)!!]
