dead?

I have never been to a chill-out festival, but I would say I imagine it being not dead but rather a bit more civilised + with more people you can actually communicate + with greater respect to nature..anyway, that's what I think...

mmm. well, i think the chill out festival works amazingly. especially if people are wanting a psychedelic experience. if people have some music to swim into, and not four to the floor beats, then the whole experience can be more full on ! there is nothing to hold on to. you have to let go. no militant beats to dance to - therefore you spend more time with interaction, conversation and communication. I somehow feel that when you put on a dance event in a beautiful location you are not really treating it right. you come, abuse the space and then leave. Not real interaction with nature at all. Not always the case, but quite often. Try it sometime - you might like it. it is for people of certain persuasion for sure though. At my last chill out festival in an ancient forrest, even those who thought they wanted trance were actually really happy that there wasn`t any ! time to reflect and relax. Eat, Sleep, talk, smoke. all the good things in life. Plenty of time for dancing to trance - just not all the time !!!!

I've also thought about the issue, but from a bit more different perspective. in festivals, the main stage is given to more progressive or psytrance acts. for some people, the chillout stage just works for a sleeping place, to get away from the noise of the main stage. I would really like to visit a festival purely composed of chill music which in my opinion would be a really different experience. I dont think many exist though.
but of course the combination of a chillout and trance stage is for me the perfect combination. I guess it is more profitable for organizers too as a festival composed of solely chillout would not bring that many people. but then maybe this time, instead of attracting a trance crowd, it would attract ambient lovers. But most people prefer to refer to the downtempo music as headphone music, and more suitable to home listening.
and I agree with candyflip that it would be far from a dead atmosphere. it has so much things different than what trance can offer.           `Bottomless wonders spring from simple rules, which are repeated without end` Mandelbrot

oooh that sounds great where is it gonna be? uk probably, damn i need to get over there.
i bet it would be an even better environment for giant domes and crazy art installations.....
there was this one party in canada i think with a field of drones , lots and lots of speakers spread wayyyy out all playing beatless sounds.... now that sounds coooool.

well, where can i send a demo for booking consideration!? I seriously gotta break out of this country eventually....
and i ve got some insane chillout mixes

There are a couple of events in the UK put on by The Big Chill

http://www.bigchill.net

which are pretty chilled - although they do tend to attract a bit more of a well scrubbed crowd than the average psy trance festival.

There are other events in the UK that are more eco/chilled including one that Humphrey may even have been involved in that went on last August Bank Holiday weekend.

Indoors - The first Synergy project in London last April was really good as it had two big chill out areas plus other festival type stuff (bands, peformers etc) as well as the trance area - it was more like an indoor festival than just another trance night- I havent managed to get to another one - but from all accounts they are still excellent nights.

Hi !

Last summer there was a small and cozy ambient festival in Soest, Netherlands. Actually, it was a visuals festival, called Photonic, but the music was all trippy and chilled. Alex Patterson was DJ'ing, a.o.

It was great! It happened in a open air theatre surounded by trees, and the combination of the visuals with the tripped out music was excellent.

There even was some dancing going on, it was not ambient ambient all the time, there were some chilled out beats too.

And it looks like the photonic people are going to put it up again this year...

(In Dutch, but the pics in the pop up and the "Film (wmv)" should give an idea of what was happening.)

BTW: if anybody can tell me what the last of the two tracks is that can be heard in the video, would be much appreciated. Such a beautiful bit of music, it's been playing in my head ever since that festival, and I'm sure it's well known, but whenever I sing it to my friends, they don't recognize it... ;-)

I enjoyed the "ambient island" on the boom festival in portugal, it was a small mountain near the sea and lots of great chill dj's and artists. every festival should have it
