Can anyone explain to me why this movie is so highly quoted, and highly praised by the trance community? i have watched it so many times, and each time i get a bad sick feeling inside me when i do. the movie shows massive drug use (not in a good way at all), i guess some would consider that "cool" and therefore i see the attraction somewhat. Yet, the state in which they are in the movie about 99% of the time after using any of the drugs that they "arm themeselves to the teeth" with , is terrible! they are sick, and vomiting and having bad trips, bad vibes and one thing for sure, the whole movie does not make me wanna do any of those drugs for sure.. even in his narration of the movie he clearly indicated that he is not really enjoying any of drugs they take. so what gives? what's the attraction? furthermore, some artists take really good samples from that movie like - Psysex - "Hot damn, I've never ridden in a convertable before...... is that right?" but some take drug "promoting" samples which i dont neccesarily think is a positive thing. without really wanting to enter the discussion of that subtopic... can anyone comment and enlighten me as to the attraction of that drug frenzied movie to actuall music? are we massichists? those drugs are definetly not fun in those doses or at all for that matter..... i dont get it, the Dr Gonzo character is pure evil too....

read the book
although its a gr8 movie (i couldnt stopped laughing for a sec) it doesnt passes any of the real issues that this book speaks of, and therfore when someone who didnt read the book watches this film all he sees is a "drug movie". its the directors fault, not yours.
after you read the book you can find many discussions on it in the internet (the guy who wrote it Hunter S. Thompson was a really innovative reporter and writer who back at his time was almost a symbol in USA until he got all fucked up and started to reporting crazy shite)
hope you enjoy it... i did

personally... i see it like this
how many people enjoy watching an arnold film? or a james bond movie? or the matrix? or john woo movies? millions of people... why... cos the violence is fucking cool.
but how many of these people actually believe violence is cool to actually do? only a tiny few, who are rightly considered nutters and hopefully pay by going to jail.
so it is with drugs.
its damn funny and in a stupid way its also damn cool to see people doing them to ridiculous extremes. but similarly that doesnt mean most people will actually want to go out there and do that. and since the movie shows how fucked up they get, it actually helps discourage people from stupid binges like that.
and then as for using samples... well... psy/goa has always loved samples about drugs+acid, and its also always liked stupid/comedy/tongue in cheek samples ("its like a flying saucer!" / "jesus didnt dance , but his beat goes on"), and with FALILV you get both of them rolled into one.
plus from an artists point of view i can say that johnny depp's narration sounds absolutely begging to be sampled, he has such great enunciation!
but yeah... i think its been overdone by now.

IFAIS they tried to do commercial movie about drug use and the craziest/funniest kind of drug using people, and choose to do it in a funny way.
I didn't like this movie that much, watched it only once and find it funny (I watched it in the mood our friend solipt1c suggested ). I like some songs with samples from this movie.
Usually I don't like "drug samples", but depending on what the sample says, the atmosphere of the track and in the other samples of the track, it can be excelent. Obviously, it's a matter of taste. I like messages.

Yeah, I'm with shulman - read the book. The book is actually much funnier than the movie. I think the directors tried to tack on a anti-drug message in the film. In the book they do get fucked up but it ain't all bad |

i also read and watched it, and agree with my friends that if you didnt read the book, go and get it. but i also think the movie is nice. i dont believe someone who didnt share the experiences they have in the movie, would share the same way as someone who has. it has been able to catch various moments which you can relate to.
johnny depp getting out the car, the way he walks and stuff. nice one

interesting you should bring that up, surrender - i did a paper for college on what in that movie appeals to popular culture today - .. yeah, the weird &*!# they make you do at college these days ! - ...
if you watch the movie ( or better yet, read the book ! - the movie glosses over a lot of the emotion in the book ) with the drugs as just a theme of the time, its really all about johnny depp stuck in the american dream of the 70's, but trying to go back to the 60's where his heart belongs .. he's in a time ( the 70's ) characterized by material success - epitomized by vegas and its vulgar money grabbing capitalism - when all he wants is the freedom of the 60's - hunter s thompson describes that freedom in his own way - and sneers at the 70's through his crazy trip to vegas ... it really isnt about the drugs that much - just like you could say pulp fiction isnt about the violence, in a way ..
as for the psy sampling - listen to l.s dance one more time .. and then tell me those arent some great samples !

I think the point of the movie is to show how ridiculous the whole movement had become by that time. A movement that started with the likes of genious' like huxley had turned its ugly head and become a sort of drug pumping mind numbing affair rather than a psychedelic experimenting/ mind opening one. The reason I feel i like it is because of the excess drug usage sits as a constant reminder that too much of anything is bad specially the drugs they use in the movie. We always love things that teach us something specially things that we deal with on a day to day basis or in my case a month to month basis . Ofcourse the most obvious reason for liking the movie is that it is funny and IMO alot of us can relate to some of the wierdness that comes that is potrayed ... the scene where everybody turns into some sort of a dinosaur or something like that touched me, since I have had that trip - the only differrence is I thought it was funny, while the character in the movie freaked out on it. As far samples - hey man, we all know what goes on at these parties, using drug related samples is not so much promotion of a drug as much as it is a realization that it is part of this culture - anybody who feels otherwise is just kidding themselves. |
