hello all,
i was doing some HD maintenance this weekend and stumbled upon this gem. these were purchased in southern california in the 90's at retail prices ($12-$15). at the time i had a large budget for music and fax fit perfectly. new cds all the time

fast forward, in 2004-5 i decided to do a little experiment in non-attachment and let about half of the rarer ones go on ebay. some of you may even have a couple of these?

the proceeds funded some nice fly fishing gear, a nice compliment to ambient music

i post this here as a true lover of rare and hard to find music and also as a testament to collector fanaticism, hedonistic splurging and following your bliss wherever it may lead you. all comments are welcome...

I used to see these cds in second hand shops way back in the 90's, but didn't buy them as they weren't quite what I was into at the time.

Now I wish I did, as I am quite into that style now... doh!

Hope you enjoy your fishing gear! I learned years ago that I can't part with hardly any of my cds without later regretting it. Tho I suppose I'm older now and mopre able to discern which ones are less likely to result in regret if I sell them.

glad to see a few of you enjoyed seeing this collection and it's nice to finally share this with a few people who appreciate it.

for around 3 years I lived without TV, so music became my tv. i have so many fond memories of journeys from that era. I actually liked it better that way.

it would be hard to name a particular favorite there are so many classics from there, but i really love tetsu inoue's works. my best 'find' was a copy of "glitch - inertia" in the used bin for $8.99 some of you may have saw this if you zoomed in for the original resolution on flickr.

without getting too specific, one of the cds (music to films) sold for over $300, and many more for over$100. i met so many nice people and sold to many different countries. I was surprised how many people from germany bought them. i wish i had kept a little map with push pins in it and labels where the cds ended up.

of the original collection i still have about 60 of them with no plans to sell again.

sellers remorse? maybe a bit, but flyfishing is also a magical endeavor to me so it was an even trade probably.

I know that some people have a negative view of how inflated prices get sometimes and how collectors profit while artists don't always reap the rewards of making classic works. (but that's probably better discussed in a new topic) but,it was definitely an interesting experience for me. bittersweet comes to mind.... breaking up a monumental collection also. i regret now not making wav copies to keep even though not having them goes deeper than just 1s and 0s.

thanks for letting me reminisce amongst friends for a bit
cheers from arizona,
rob

Call me a youngster or clueless but I've never heard any music from the FAX label so I'm not sure what all the hype is about. Are they valuable because they are rare or because the music is so good. ?

tough question tyler, and I don't have a good answer for you.

they are rare, with 500-3000 copies distributed worldwide. in the early days they were coming out with stuff 2-4 times per month and were extremely hard to find here in the US. this was when ambient was just getting discovered. back around the time beyond (UK) and waveform (their sister label in sedona) were becoming noticed. probaby too much to go into the history of early electronica here, but there is more info specifically about fax here.

there were some definite criticisms about quality. with so much volume there are bound to be some dogs in there, but there were also some brilliant pieces of work in there and when it was good it was really good. some of them were ok and kinda grew on you... or maybe not. definitely a page out of music history.

as to their value in terms of rare vs. quality. it's a little bit of both i suppose. plus market conditions, fanaticism etc. all my fax cd's were purchased at retail price. i've never paid over $40 for a cd personally. (jairamji and ochi brothers were my most expensive purchases)

It's a mix of both. FAX put out some amazing stuff in the 90's. I dearly love the ten or twelve releases I have from them. Like Rob said they were generally limited releases, so there's a collectability factor as well. Add in some nostalgia for a decade gone, and you've got the perfect recipe for people willing to pay _a lot_ of money for these CDs. The short answer is FAX (and other labels like em:t) are the Ultimae Records of the 90s.

I have and _love_ S.H.A.D.O.. I was hard pressed not to be rude when a friend of mine snatched S.H.A.D.O. 2 out of a bin I just started to comb through at a used record shop some years back. I haven't seen it since without some high price tag attached to it.

God, this thread makes me want to pull all my 90's ambient out and sit up all night with a bottle or two of wine.

FAX was more about quantity than quality in my opinion. There are a few quite nice releases but the majority is like bad mainstream pop music (just Ambient styles) pumped out like mad.           http://enjoys.it

Some of them are "very very good music".

im not a big fan from the early catalog, i prefer the albums more into the '90, and some of the present releases...

albums like:

Silence 2
Outland
Planetarium 2
Silence 4 (amazing music)
Shado 2
Psychonavitation

by chance my pocket are saved by itune, Fax catalog is on it, especialy P.N. releases,
like:

Art of Love
Russian Spring
Sultan Osman
Sultan Orahn
Sultan Osman
+ more

for quasga:
give it a try to:

Russian Spring
Art of Love
Silence 2 & 4
Planetarium 2

very good releases, available on itune...

I only buy uncompressed music, mate.

But thanks for the recommendations at any rate.
