I'm wondering what people like to hear/play in the chill area besides just typical psychill? I like hearing glitch, idm, sufi music, some dubstep. I haven't heard anyone around here play any ambient techo/dub techno, but I think that would sound really good too. Maybe some ambient drone or more "out there" ambient stuff.
Thoughts? |

I like to hear anything that is electronic and relatively downbeat or ambient. Although some of the dub-techno stuff can still be quite relaxing and appropriate.
I think a good chill space at a festival should cover all the styles you've mentioned above, and more. The music really needs to evolve and/or revolve over the life of the party.

Nice topic! I have to say that I hate that typical Shpongle wanna be psy chill with indian vocals and those pseudo acid sounds.. I couldn't ever imagine that psy chill would become so lame since it was started very promissing...Of course there are some projects like Eat Static,Tripswitch, Mirror System, Shpongle etc which have their special own sound full of quality. There are tons of other music for chill out stages which I prefer the term alternative stage more than the chill stage.. There is futuristic ambient music like HUVA Network,Solar Fields etc, dub,dub techno, dubstep, deep minimal techno, breakbeat or more upbeat stuff.. ,IDM, trip hop and experimental stuff.. I believe that alternative stage is the place that evolves the music , djs and producers, the crowd , getting in touch with the most fresh sounds around, getting inspired and create the new sounds..So it's a pitty to see that the most of the times those stages hosting only that lame psy chill and mystic crap..it's a waste of time I think...
The best experience I had for alternative stage was Sonica 2007, and I have this as the best example for how an alternative stage should be.. A great blend of many kinds of music full of quality ,from ambient, dubstep, experimental, techno, break beat, ethnic, dub hosting an amazing line up!

great topic! i love non psy ambient and chill out music
too bad that its such a small genre, and most of the psychedelic ambient music that releases this days are not really my style at all
my recommendation is : Ludvig & Stelar - Relax (2008)
http://www.saikosounds.com/english/display_release.asp?id=7432
a very special cd that i play in my place nonstop for some time now
its a very relaxed ambient music, combined with a lot of instuments and styles from jazz to classic and some vocals as well
a very high quality music IMO, a "must" cd in every house, no metter which music you like or how old are you.

lounge, quirky minimal and dub techno, warm deep house, idm, atmospheric breaks and dnb, and various unclassifiable free-form tracks. really anything besides banging dancefloor music.
  ..it's just another party.. |

I agree that there is plenty of bad quality psy-chill indian shpongle clone type music out there and I always like to hear a diferent angle in a chill out area. Decent dub step, dub techno, deep house, funk, maybe a bit of kraut rock or anything instrumental and enjoyable will do the trick, or traditional persian or indian music as long as there isn't too much emphasis on vocals...

Great post!
Music has evolved so much in the last 10 years and I am very excited with so many great new artists on the scene that are willing to move away from the generic psychill tag.
I was at Sonica 07 as well Tasos and the line up was incredible and what you said is so true.
It seems like there are to many artists out there that just seem to be stuck in 1999 and are either to scared or just don't have the talent to produce cutting edge, alternative sounds so instead stay in there comfort zone with the 'Sphongle like' rip off productions.
Been listening a lot to Fluid radio over the last couple of weeks and love the ethos they have of playing alternative styles. Some great artists I have heard on there are:
James Murray, Emauele Errante, bvdub, Aligning Minds, Digitonal, Evan Bartholomew, Halogen, Iambic, Marconi Union, Nalepa, Playb, Origami Biro, Vallium, maps and Diagrams and Field Rotation to name but a few.
May the new wave of upcoming artists continue I say |

I know that the really soft IDM I like to play seems to please people. I once played a set with stuff like Helios, Sabi, Telefon Tel Aviv, Boards of Canada, old Aphex Twin (ambient stuff)to a bunch of people shrooming away, and everyone told me they loved it. |
