hey guys,
what is the best way to make a kick fat...recently ive been boosting the very low end (more than 3 db) and cutting all the high frequencies.
it sounds ok, but im sure its "wrong" im pretty sure there is a better way, perhaps a plugin for macosx that does that for you...
let me know
thanks guys

boosting the lowend is not the way,try to make it phat from the beginning so you won't need to mess too much with the Eq,
it's better to cut freq than boost ones don't forget that.
now about the fat kick that you want to achieve read tutorials in "the mother of all kickdrums" topic i'm sure you'll learn some effective methods to make your killer kick..enjoy

UAD-1 Pultec Eq
UAD-1 Helios Type 69 Eq
Can't be fatter than that.........
But a very good and very cheap alternative is the Vibe Eq by Stillwell.
A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life. |

Apart from the fact that your sound should be as good as possible from the beginning as it is usually easier to subtract with an eq than inhance (though of course not impossible, I would say other than that there is no right or wrong method. The endresult is what counts in a mix imho

try notch up 3DB in fairly nerrow Q on:
1.50hz
2.63hz
3.80hz
4.100hz
A/B/C/D those
now open analizer and try the fundemntal of the kick since its deiffrent evry time
also remove the wood sound around 500hz always helps if your kick is flat wide spectrum

a fat sound need to be balanced and not just low end thumping..
boost 50-60 hz for really phat low end
boost 80-120 for more boom.
boost 2Khz for more presence
boost 8k-10k for more Crisp & air
cut resonate mids.
a good trick is to lower the pitch of the kick for maximum reaction with the Bass.

It's a very easy way to shape your kickdrum using Battery, tweak Volume envelope, Pitch envelope and Tune, and you have a chance to get very good result even from lousy source sample. Very flexible and creative way, i use it a lot. When you are happy with your kick, add EQ (there is enough info here about what should take your attention when eq-ing kick) and become even more happy
