A Well programed Bass should be fat from the start, without the help of eq or comp or even chorus. Anyway I've never manage to make a bass any fatter by adding a compressor.

Here is what I noticed:

- The pattern is very important, some pattern won't sound too good with certain bass patches.

-layered basslines can really make your bass fat, but for me it really only worked well, with 136 bpm progressive style bass. Cosmosis bass patches do the job very nicely.

-I find difficult to layer full on basses , so this is where ones needs to spend time understanding how to program a bass which isn't that difficult if one knows the important factors.

with trilogy for example it is very easy to make a fat bass with juno 60 sawtooth wave. And I by seeing andy's video I beleive its quite common.

distortion, and all the other tip you can see in other threads will help make the bass even fatter or with more edge but the original condition IMHO is, its got to be fat from the start! So load your favourite vst, spend some time finding the right envelloppe and right filter setting.

Take this to your heart! Absolutely true!

check my website and the workshops, maybe you find some answers.
maybe the bassclones can help you.

The second clone of an eskimo bassline is done with three different synths (cronox sounds best in that case) with only eq and quadrafuzz in the chain... (just to demonstrate that the patch does most of the work.
I will upload a cubase file for it anytime soon.

agree the bass must be fat from the start then you have to be carefull with equing, the sound must be well balanced, to much in the medium and it ll sound thin.

I dont eq my bass much at all...I rather like to remove the mids with some multiband distortion like trash, sounds MUCH better imo

what I do then is putting a little bit of bass enhancing (from newb, really dont like the waves stuff!)

and last but not least, a tiny amount of stereospread works wonders also to give the bass that extra thing...           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

Agree too, a sound / recording has to be good from the source, only then you'll have some "meat" to work on and sculpture for your need. Also, every sound in your song / track should "fit" the other sounds too, fatness also comes from how the sound (bass in our case) suits the kick, lead, arps etc.

Regarding compression, I tend to disagree with previous posts as compression can be used for shaping the sound (for example, you might want to use a bit longer attack setting so you can get a little bit of "clickiness" from your bassline - might be desirable for certain types of basslines)

Something I tend to do is notch filter (negative EQ with high Q setting) the bass (VERY CAREFULLY) somewhere below 250Hz so it sits better with the kick.

the real fat bass hm??

i think it´s also about the kickdrum, the plug ins, and mastering..
and to know how to tweak the plugs...

killa for fat basses are

quaddrafuzz
bbe sonicmaximizer
dominion vst (which is freeware)
modern plugins
and some others..

and a bassline without a good kick won´t sound fat i think..

go for subconsciousmind´s tricks...and check out these plugins also...
hope it helps           https://soundcloud.com/twonzero-progressive/twonezero-alienpast-soon-on

Dont be fooled, Compressor doesnt automatically make ur bass fatter, often if not used correctly can deaden ur sounds. What a compresser does is reduce ur dynamic range and imho a fat abss need to be a very full range sound... very open....
I prefer to get my sound as close as possible to how i want it before i add compressors or eq's and those i try to use them not to fix up a problem, but rather in a creative way, like to bring a tone out that was previously masked or w/e...           [[[G|L|I|T|C|H]]]

you can have more attack (transient) with a compressor cause it make the sustain sound thin (but it can sound nice and more thight)but plugins compressor are not the way to go to get fat sound imo, you have to look for plugs that fake or add more dynamic like a distortion that produce harmonics

also try R-Bass or Max-Bass. Read the manual, stick to saw + sine bass patches and you will have the bass line so fat that you won't believe it. Karma synth is capable of making nice, present and fat bass line sounds. Use some notch filters with keytrack an octave above the fundamental note and maybe another notch 3 octaves above the root key. It makes a phaser-like sound but when you change the key you change eq points as well and the bass line remains clean and sharp.           "It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition.
