One must be careful about the circumstances of the experiment, and the sensational headlines the press enjoys printing. Here's a slightly more detailed account of what that experiment does:

The key here is that the NEC researchers sent a light pulse rather than single photons. A light pulse is A LOT of photons. They were measuring the peak of the pulse. Well, hell they shot this pulse into an energy-pumped medium and basically all it takes is the front edge of the pulse to cause a controlled avalanche in the medium. This pulse was way longer than the faster-than-light time savings giving the medium plenty of front-end information before the "fat" part of pulse actually struck the medium.
It's all still a bit of a macroscopic effect compared to single photons and relativity and all.
