From my experience, there's a lot of pressure from organizers to do this live thing.... When it comes to marketing, the term "dj" isn't very exciting. Especially when there's a lot of so called djs that are severely lacking some skill in their craft. I have had some experiences where organizers would only want me to play if I brought out my computer. Irregardless of being a skilled dj, when it comes to getting people interested in attending, organizers use this buzzword. In the end I would think that as long as the artist is playing his own music, what he plays it from is irrelevant, but perhaps this fake live issue would be less of one if it wasn't a tool used for marketing.
Now I am not discounting acts that put a lot of effort into their performance, and I also do feel that if you do spend time on your performance, then that is definitely something of merit and should garner some respect. However, 90% of the time most artists are invited to play based upon their music, not always how they perform.

This is very different in the Techno scene.
Where dj's really are admired for their Dj skills.
In the techno scene people always talk and look forward to dj sets, where in the Psy scene hardly any dj-set is discussed.

I think dj's in this scene deserve so much more credit.
It is really hard to mix the more intense psy trance well, with so many layers and with each artists being so unique in their own sounds.
I used to be able to do an off the cuff techno or acid tech set no worries, whereas with psy I need to know the track perfectly to be able to use it well.
I think the scene in general would be served better with a shift toward the dj and away fromthis fake live thing.
Some of the better gigs I've seen is a dj mixing with his friend or a producer addingin live synth over the top, even if it isn't his tunes, just adding that extra layer to the set, and the dude onthe synth doesn't need to worry so much about the "live" aspect of the whole track, he can just work on live synth
I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy! |

techno leaves so much more room for dj than psytrance wich has so many effects and sounds and layers on it allready that u just dont have much room to add anything on it without making it too full and then when u have that small break with only few elements on it u just have to give that to audience and let their mind rest for a while before the next full on minf blowing distorted effect massagre

Yeah, i have played this way a few times.
Works nicely! (if the guy on the synth knows what he is doing!)
I agree....DJ sets to me are much more impressive.
Only thing about a Live act.....is the artist is there.
An hour is more than i can handle.

i had a drummer playing along with my djset once and never again but its a nice idea, todays dj equipment allows syncing other stuff like vst's, filters and other stuff thru midiclock..

Sorry but i think you are a litle bit wrong about Universo paralello festival.....because there still playing Djs on Main Floor (aways high quality djs) and all years there s some kind of CDJ on the stage.
but you can check also that 70% of the line up are Live Acts...
I think PSYtrance is something that works better and easyer with Live then DJ, because is hard to find a DJ that can keep the same style for more then 1 hour playing different projects.

Thats because people has no longer faith in djs in psy scene, part because bedrrom djs are everywhere playing shit music in a shit way.
"The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures." |

and what about "bedroom live acts" . . many of those as well.........too many...way too many:)
I personally prefer a skilled and well prepared dj set, cus of more sound variation and cus its less predictable than a live act(in most cases)...

Yeah..ok the guys on the wabsite are really lame they do absolutely nothing.
But when I started playing "live", I used 12 mono channels, so I needed a mixer.
After 5 gigs I discovered that in psy organisers don't care about that. It's extra cost, and they don't want to pay it.
So 2 of the 5 times I needed to use my backup cd, becouse there was only 2 stereo channels at the dj mixer available for us.
So now I'm crimping my live set, into a 2 stereo channels (I just need to mix it, but audio is already at the right place), and my partner plays on a synth. And he plays as much as possible, but neverless 50% of the gigs they don't have a mixer to give everything a place.
And also don't forget...we make the music, we don't burn a cd....and that is the most important |
