have seen acid tech muso's in the golden days brining out almost the entire studio live and doing it 100% live.

computers ruined live.

that used to be my setup in early 2000...
completely hardware, 303, 202, 606, 909,707, juno6, mks30, samplers.....and many more...no computer...

it was very fun, but it was a pain to carry around, I always ended up having to repair broken stuff after shows...
and the most important part: it was nearly impossible to play out of town...

Beleive me, I am very happy I have ableton now

I dont think computer ruined live act, but it definately made it easier...

Oh I'm not saying you should HAVE to do this, but it can be done.

It made it easier, but also easier to rip off people as well.

I just think people would care less if you were just honest.

Why not dj mix your acts and have a small synth to play some additonal sounds over the top?

Call it dj set + live elements or something.

It is the honesty that matters, not the act itself.

If you arenot going to play live, then say:

Main Stage:

Sergeant Pepper (live dance show)

From my experience, there's a lot of pressure from organizers to do this live thing.... When it comes to marketing, the term "dj" isn't very exciting. Especially when there's a lot of so called djs that are severely lacking some skill in their craft. I have had some experiences where organizers would only want me to play if I brought out my computer. Irregardless of being a skilled dj, when it comes to getting people interested in attending, organizers use this buzzword. In the end I would think that as long as the artist is playing his own music, what he plays it from is irrelevant, but perhaps this fake live issue would be less of one if it wasn't a tool used for marketing.

Now I am not discounting acts that put a lot of effort into their performance, and I also do feel that if you do spend time on your performance, then that is definitely something of merit and should garner some respect. However, 90% of the time most artists are invited to play based upon their music, not always how they perform.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

@Mubali: you have a big point there, one of the main reasons artist name themselves "live" is because djing in psytrance scene is undervalued.

I dont know why, because of thousands of bedroom dj's or because of the lack of real skilled dj's.

Also look at the video form universo paralello, they dont even bring cdj1000 more.

^^ a good dj can spin virtually in almost any machine..just a little bit of pratice..i think it all comes down to tastes..

and yes the dj is undervalued...maybe because most of them don´t buy the music they use?so why to pay for a person who will use ripped of music..better book an artist and you have certain that he will play his music...live or no live..           ...

yeah dj's are under valued, and yes within psytrance there are really few dj's who know how to mix properly...           On 2011-03-08 23:13, moki wrote:

one think i really think also, is that, probably a lot of dj´s do know how to mix, eq and stuff, but do they know how to create a "voyage"?
create something with start, middle and a proper end?
i have seen, or listened very few dj´s do it properly..the most i see is to spin one tracks after the others showing the lastest hits, unreleaseds, and no trip whatsoever..just banging music with no sense..

I think labels and artist should made some kind of "license" for dj's, someway of giving some recognition to true djs who bought their own music and have proven mixing skills.

by looking at all theese fake live acts it seems more like they have been way over rated, their behavior have actually nothing to do with dj´s unless they start doing fake djsets aswell.

About the "license" for for dj's there are something called label dj's who are approved by some label so they probably know what they are doing but there are lots of unsigned dj's that are quite skilled aswell, and atleast they do stuff in real time and are not afraid of trying new things or human errors and even if a trainwreck in a crowded dancefloor could be a nice pain in the ass its the best way of learning and practise makes perfect in the end

The fake twisting of knobs on unplugged Midi/Synth is really cheesy...kinda shows how things are going...its all about the "gimme my money"!!!! I dont know the exact situation but im very sad to see Cedric in that video...

very very real extra cool live acts:

O.o.o.d (full band)
Tom Cosm (master of ableton live , it might look like "midi controler" only but its false there is SO MUCH to do with his methods)
Reality Pixie (quite similar with Cosm , with extra cool WII remotes for controling)
Sun project (full band)
Texas Faggott (2 people going nuts with synth guitars and mics on top of their tracks being mixed on the fly)
Squaremeat (playing the tracks in audio channels with 2-3 main leads in midi and make all the knob chages in live , diffrent from originl , pritty cool)
Eat Static (1 man madness)
Reflections (3 people band)

I would like to add Uni to this list.
