Yep, something that I do like using the Polar TI for, as you can tweak through synced BPM intervals in real time.
Still though, the disrtiest FM I ever got was from the Doepfer modular. The Doepfer LFOs go up to 5Khz! The "inaccurate VCOs gave some brilliant sliiightly dissonant FM leads, something you can re-create with digital synths, but they don't sound so brilliantly rough.

If you are looking for the authentic extreme FM leads, try Zebra.
This is has been my all time favorite synth ever since I decided it was time to actually learn how to use it.
Try this set up for a head start:
Try playing with Tune, LFOg1, Detune, And Fx: Cutoff.
Also where it says poly you can select dual instead of eleven or quad, whichever you like more.
You should get what you are looking for within minutes.
