Artist: Various Artists

Release Title: Extrasensory Perception

Label: Mikrokosmos

November 1, 2007

"The well known artists Martin and Liquid Soul presents the first unmixed compilation. The compilation 'Extrasensory Perception' include 8 exclusive tracks from todays best artists in the progressive trance scene. With tracks from Freq, Liquid Soul, Earsugar, Andromeda, Visua, Side A, Behind blue eyes, Dj Martin and Infinity, Martin and Liquid Soul bring you awesome new tracks from undisputed leaders of the genre together with new coming names. With a incredible good flow, this compilation catch you from the first second on and let you make your own 'Extrasensory Perceptions'"

That's what Mikrokosmos Records has to say about this cd. As I have heard very strong releases by many of these artists I could not resist.

*Disclaimer* I am unusually opinionated about music, sometimes overly so. I will never pad or mask my gut reaction in a review. With that in mind I will review this in real time for the first time that I listen to it. Over time a release either grows on me or away from me. Please do not be upset if my review is not all kind words and fluff.

Lets go!

1. FREq / Avatar

No fluffy intro, just a hard kick and a few bass notes. Some pads and nice rhythms. So far nothing New from FreQ but after a small breakdown the track gets into style. Smooth and spacey. Just the way I like my FreQ. This track has room to move around in. some nice melodic leads (that's what FreQ does best no?) and fantastic tribal rhythms. Already I have at least one track I will play out. 8/10 This is a great track that does not disappoint. Spacey without being lazy, and no 2 min breakdown to kill the dance-floor. This is great stuff.

2. Liquid Soul Vs Freq / Liquid Frequencies (Liquid Soul Rmx)

This is a dream team for me. Two of the best progressive psy producers should fit well. A nice FreQ style lead starts us out. A very strong start to this track makes wonder if this is not the star of this cd. In a deeper key then the last track this song has a slightly edgy-er vibe. A pumping kick and dark bassline move this track along with one hell of a build up at around 2:30, this track has my Mackie's and me dancing. Some fantastic changes around the 6min mark really impressed me. Going slightly more minimal at the end the track ends strong. 9.5/10

Well done guys!

3. Earsugar / New Era

This is Liquid Soul's side project if I am right. Starts with some nice swirling synths and a squishy vocal sample. No doubt the sample tells me the secret of life the universe and everything but its too "squished" to understand. Nice rolling bassline. This track has a slightly darker feel then the first two. "A New Era" A sample lets me know. Is it? I'm not convinced yet. Good production and nice distortion use, something about this track is just not sitting right with me. At about the 5 min mark the track S L O W S D O W N. A nice effect. Not the strongest track but still good. 6/10

4. Visua / Spindrive (Gaudium Rmx)

A house beat welcomes me into this track. Quickly it moves into tribal psytrance. Great drum work and a typical Gaudium sound. Very full sounding without at all sounding full-on. Over all a good track and one I would play out. 7.5/10

5. Infinity / Stratosphere

The Cd tells me this is Nick Cr. Karamalakis. I could find nothing online about him but this is a very "FreQ" Sounding track. Nice countdown intro. Good dancefloor tune. Nothing new really but still very talented. 8/10

6. Andromeda / Plazza Del Trippy
Anders Nilsson serves up the next track. Great melodies and a solid kick that keeps it moving. Something about this track really grabs me. Progressive Goa? Yes both modern and eastern. Slightly off key melodies haunt the later part of the track. This is actually psychedelic in my mind. Well done! 8.5/10

7. Behind Blue Eyes / Rumble In The Jungle (Zen Mechanics Rmx)

BBE from Iboga records has tow very well respected producers from the Iboga roster. While I respect their music I have not really been grabbed by it. It is more subtle then I usually play. This Zen Mechanics Rmx has a much more driving dare I say slightly Israeli vibes.I had to play this one twice. It was hard to say the first time what I thought. Not my fave on the disk but I can tell it will be for some who buy this cd. Perhaps this is one of those tracks that opens up after a few listen. I do like the breakbeat part towards the end quite allot and the pay off after the breakdown makes it. 7.5/10

8. Side A / Cansas City Shuffle

Next up is Side A with a slightly house influenced beat. Nice tribal drums own the first min or so. Once the distorted bassline comes in its quite a haunting track. More mellow then the last few songs this is, I imagine, a real morning Gem. A very smooth track that sort of floats in place. Not allot of movement in the story it's trying to tell. 7.5/10

9. Martin / What The 'Bleep' Do I Know?

"You Play this game that you like" Tribal Progressive, straight forward with no tricks or games. Nothing to really hold my interest but still this is not a bad track at all. Just not the strongest on a very good comp. 6.5/10

Overall I have to say I am very happy I picked this up. It one of the stronger comps to hit 07 for Progressive psy. I recommend this cd to anyone who has liked Liquid Soul or Freq over the years. It will fit nicely into that kind of a set. Nice work Martin and Liquid Soul! You have put out a fantastic cd.

Yes, this is surely a must-buy for fans of the Liquid Soul and FREq sound. Infinitys "Stratosphere" is for me the surprise of the compilation - beautiful morning track. The Zen Mechanics remix for BBE is still huge, although it's been played to death this summer, and I really liked the opening FREq-tune, and the followup by Liquid Soul and FREq.

I've had "Kansas City Shuffle" for a long time, and for me this is one of his best creations so far. Great to finally see it released.

Overall a good compilation

Nice review by the way.          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

I heard Freq - Avatar played at parties two years ago already, and i couldnt get that track out of my head. Then it was released last year on the Labyrinth Mixed compilation, and I always listened to just this track in the mix.

Now Im sooooo fucking glad this track finally is released as a whole. I will make the bold claim this track is the best Freq track ever, and one of the best prog. psy tracks OF ALL TIME!! Prog psy does not get better than this track. So deep, so hypnotic, so powerful. If you compare Avatar with that abomination of an album GoSub20, its like comparing two different universes.

To sum it up: I LOVE THIS TRACK IT IS FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The other really great track on here is the Andromeda track, i love it. Its like goa melodies over a smooth proggy beat, there should be more music like that.

All other tracks are good as well, a very solid comp. But Avatar would be woth the money all by itself.           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

'Extrasensory Perception' compilation is surely one of the grooviest releases I've heard lately.

My favorites :

2. When two genious like Freq & Capo meet together, the result must be unique. The remix of Liquid Soul is so melodic and magical, with twisted affect on the dance floor.

3. THE BOMB ! Capo again, this time with Martin. They are deliver a powerful track with the most danceable kick I remember. It's so fun to dig this track, because the heavy beats and the flow vibes.

5. Psychedelic progressive, nothing to add more.

7. Zen Mechanics guys are always know how to put smile on my face and now the smiler is the biges .

Thank you Mikrokosmos Records for this high quality release and please keep them coming more often.

very well done
good compilation           If Pac-Man affected us as kids,we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music ..
