of course it looks good, it's a Porsche
ppl told me to look for any external drive with the oxford chipset, which they claim to be the best.           "a new art came into my mind which only you can create, the Art of Noises, the logical consequence of your marvelous innovations." Russolo, 1913

We use the Maxtor 1-touch at my work, and I literally have a pile of dead ones stacked up on my desk. It's nice that they have both USB and Firewire on the same drive, but they are very fragile and often suddenly die within one year.

I've had every make of hard drive die on me sooner or later, but generally Western Digitals and the Maxtor 1-touch have been the most problem-prone for me.

Hitachi's have an excellent reputation.

I have Maxtor ( don't remember the model ) with firewire connection, I played a lot of live gigs thru this HD and it fell few times and it still is working very fine ( touch wood ). Moreover since the internal HD of laptops are relatively slow ( 5400rpm most of the time ) I found that it is really neat to use external HD for lives much more stable and the laptop doesnt get overheated if its an indoor session.           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

The Lacies are generally good quality. And if youre mac user they are for you (eg firmware updaters are available for mac too). I also would recommend to buy the firewire or usb/firewire combo version.
The Lacie drives use afaik the oxford chipset.

You can check performance of any drive using this utility:
http://www.prorec.com/prorec/downloads.nsf/filename/A1BABB1A8929148B862565D30064E895

It will give you a good idea of the performance of reading/writing audio tracks to any drive. There are more articles here if you search for 'sustained transfer rate'           Keep The Faith,

Another good idea is just to get an external case that has a firewire connection, that way you can put any harddrive in it, and replace it if you need a new one, or if something bad happens...           Boom Bulenat, humus chips salat

true, most products are like this
you can open them and change the ide/sata drive and keep using the same external case.
advice: try to get any case with active fan cooling so you dont bother about hdd temperatures...           (www) DarkPrisma.com.ar/ ~ FranticNoise.com.ar/ ~ Megalopsy.com.ar/ ~

USB2 is just as fast as firewire 800           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."
