Hello everyone,
for the last few years we are having a steady argument with our CD distributor about extensive CD booklets (8, 12 or even 16 pages) and inserted DJ slip cards with BPMs and Keys. For us (Tribal Vision Records) this has always been something we believed in since the beginning of our label - I have always wanted to have nice designs, multiple pages booklets with a lot of info and pictures/illustrations and extra dj cards because I believed that the customer will appreciate it - so we have kept this policy until these days. At the same time, our distributor is trying to convince us that all this is wasted money and the customers only care about the music on the CD.
So basically my question is: what you, people that still buy CDs sometimes, think about it? Does it make any difference to you? When you are deciding if you should buy the release on CD, is this extra content a valid argument for you? Do you appreciate this stuff or it is more like "ok, whatever"? Any opinion on this issue will be much appreciated

Sure it makes a big different, people buying cd's are probably doing it for more than just the music. Collectors item
Some people might think, ok whatever, but doubt they are buying cd's frequently, they are probably more of the download generation. For dj's that are buying cd's the slip card is a good thing to add it makes the case look better than a handwritten tracklist. 16 pages might be overkill even if its a nice thing to do for them customers, but there have to be a good balance

I find the slips with the artowrkon them annoying because it is hard to see in dim lighting and confusing, I just get the BPMs reading myself and print my own slips on plain paper in bold typing.
Large booklets are nice, but there is no need to repeat info if it has been said before with no major updates.
I don't need to read the history of a label or act 5+ times, once is enough.
I think alot of live/personal photo's is a good idea but even more is doing likein the heavy metal underground, some release with a bonus live record cd or even a poorly recorded live dvd/vcd...
I know money is limited but reading the same stuff is boring, and not very good for the environment...
FOr a booklet in an album also a list of up to date studio gear is kinda cool as well, so you know what they used to make the sounds
I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy! |

It's nice to have them as Dennis said, a collector's item.
But doesn't have to be something too extensive. I myself rather print on sheets.
It's a matter of patterns, since Beatport tunes won't have booklets, so they'll be all the same.
General information such as BPM's, Keys, artist Bio, thanking notes, images (could be pictures of the artist as well) and perhaps a short Bio of the label.

Add More Stickers... Always a plus point... Less written stuff... Artwork is always welcome...
Im all for more the better... But when selecting a CD... only the music inside makes me decide if its a buy or not.

honestly instead of spending so much on the booklets and pages stickers...just make the cover and a t-shirt with the album logo...it probably costs the same effectively...maybe a few extra bucks..but i would pay $4 extra per cd if it came with a t-shirt or a cap...

In Androcell's album Efflorescence, he has different artwork for each track on the booklet on the inside cover. Not something I would expect labels to do because he's a digital artist and did it himself, so he saved cost there. But, it is very cool.
It's nice to read something about the artist's inspiration. On the inside of the newest Elea cd, they wrote about how certain movies influenced the tracks on the album which I thought was pretty cool.
I would say that if the artist or artists have something meaningful to put there, go ahead and do it- it's not necessary nor do I think it's a selling point. Having bpms next to each track is nice, definitely do that. I've also been agitated that some cds released recently don't have a slip to take out of the case with a tracklist (for us djs who carry around cds in a cd book). Some even don't have that AND don't have the tracks labeled right on the cd, so cd players can't even read the track name- another annoying thing.
Try to come up with something unique that other labels don't do (like putting a sticker for the buying inside the cd cover ).

I like this idea.
Maybe put a one-time use code on the inside booklet for a discount on label merchandise from their website. Good incentive to buy and will get people to visit the website.

Nice topic...
From my p.o.v its always nice to put a booklet.... ok a lot is not required, but mainly a shirt booklet with some info...pics.... concept etc etc.... would be definitely a good buy! Stickers too..!
An example i could give you something of recent..was the whole Aes Dana - Leylines album. the whole packaging was just brilliant imo. A small booklet regarding the concept, interesting pictures.... had me watch the package all the time ever since i bought it. Never has a cd in the recent past attracted me so much.

And as somebody said, discount code on the Cd for merchandise is a good idea.... But then again, its not difficult for the leakers to put out that as well..... So there shld be another way to it...
Overall... its always a nice idea to put a booklet.... it just shows that.... theres a lil heart put on to the cd..... than with just some random tracks....

You can make a code that expires, after one use.
