so , what are the expenses for making track ?
it divide to 2 groups , basic stuff you should buy , and stuff per track you make (time electricity etc)
here is list of good and not the most expensive:
computer - 1500$
soundcard - 400$
nice monitors - 1000$
midi keys/controller - 300$
you can add synth for abit warmer sound - thats more 1500$.
thats 4700$
time - from 2 days to 2 weeks and some even say 2 months per track
for djing - cd case full of new realeses - easy can go over 1500$
time to get contacts for getting unr music - that can sum up to thousands of msn hours.. also getting gigs takes alot of energy..
so , after all that , knowing that basic payment for tracks is 250-300$ and same for dj set (if anything advenced , alot work on % from sales)..
what your thoughts on that ?

my thoughts are that your calculations are flawed because they are based on a weird time constraint that u invented... its not so cut and dry mate, music is first learned..... cases fill themselves not in a day, but over time, connections, equipment and everything u mentioned actually doesnt come in a package bundle as you present it here.
its like saying - working at a bar:
18 years of living cost - $300,000
bartending schools - $500
pants, shirts - $100
etc.etc.etc.................. see my point?
oh you forgot to mention that 'sense of rythm' went up this year - market analyst claim it should be around $27.1 per day in 2007 and is available through a 36 month lease.

All i can say is i that i have FULL respect for the people that turn it into profession and try to earn from making this sort of music nowadays. You gotta have huge cahoonas to actually try and live like that.

i have spent some money on equipment...

no profit what so ever on that gear...

I'm afraid most of us are consumers of audio-stuff instead musicians with acceptable expenses But that doesn't matter if you do it just for fun. Trying to earn a living from psychedelic trance in the psychedelic trance scene alone is brave to say the least.

hmmmm, either stupid or brave....and I'm one or the other...
I think the idea that you could do something with it is to not limit yourself to just one scene.
As you get better your music will grow and over time you just make "your" style of music, and that might be accepted elswhere or that could turn into a music soundtrack for a movie, video game, or other venture. Maybe all that crazy psychadelic morphing of sounds would come in handy to someone looking for someone to design sound fx for a film, or a commercial. I'm sure you get the idea...
Nothing you work hard at is a waste of time. There is always something good that can come of it, just make sure to leave yourself open to other possibilities. Remember if it's what you want to do, don't give up...ever, anything is possible. |

stuff like computers and synths, hardware etc are FIXED costs
electricity is a running cost....
the cost of track to make would change for the intial period until you recoupe you fixed assest costs....
So your first track = entire fixed cost + electricity
2nd track = fixed cost/2 + elcec etc
until you break even ....
then the cost of a track would be the electricy used....
However you need to factor into it time spent...
If you are a professional producer or musician this is your main costing...
i.e 1 hour studio time = $x
depending on the x value would change the cost of the track, plus some people work at different rates...
so one cant really define this track cost thing at all and i think this is very pointless....
