Does anyone have some good advice on doing this? I'm not very fluent with this and have just heard a lot of producers saying they do this/suggesting to do this.
Any advice about settings/plug-ins used would be great or just walk through how you do it. Some discussion on the benefits/drawbacks of doing this would be great too. Thanks!

My suggestion is to create 2 tracks with the same VST and preset, then pan one hard left and the other hard right. IMHO, they should play atleast some of the same notes. You can also still modulate the pan on them, and whatever other parameters. You can also bus them together and put some FX on the bus channel, as long as the FX won't ruin the stereo field... |

Bounce out your Lead and keep the fader at -0
Duplicate Track.
Pan one hard left and the other hard right.
Offset one's time difference by about 10ms.
Send both of them to a group track for inserts and leveling.
For added fatness, you can bounce out your same lead an octave lower and keep it centered. Maybe throw a filter or distortion unit on that one. |

create sound u like, double it, set trackdelay to choice if u like for more phatness. pan to your like, one hard left one right maybe for more stereo.
play around with the delaytime to get some kind of flange or phase effect like with an old audiotapemachine
for layering i use synth with layer option or instrument rack in ableton. but this is not that often =D just keep attention on the frequencies and eq to your taste.
cheers

all nice advice
will work much better if doing it on source and not wav file.. specialy with free running osc.
so i would records the synth 3 times and then use this 3 files and not copy the same 1.. the point is they must NOT be the same imo

yes for sure there´s no need doin this in wave and only one sound. instead it´s really goin wild like elad mentioned with running osc free
double the synth should be just an advice to start with (to give your sound some phattness), try what comes through your mind. sure it´s much more interesting playing around with different synths and sure maybe free running oscs.
