What's an expander?

An Expander gives you more dynamic range (changes of velocity), a Compressor reduces that dynamic range.

what has an expander to do with a gate m8 ??

sorry but, a gate just cuts audio below a certain threshhold..used mainly for live drum recordings..

but doesn`t give you more dynamic range..like an expander f.e.

its nice to use an expander before a gate, to separate the unwanted from the wanted sounds. And yo can make an expander work in a similar way to a gate...           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

turn expander ratio to max and u basically get gate..
here, this graph represent this in picture.. expander has softer curve while gate has vertical, usually to -80dB so it cuts all of sound..
