i never hear anyone mentening the use of expanders on the bassline , i used Flux soleras Expander lastnite, wow what a fuking result it gave the Bassline Some real power grit, movement and groove. especailly with tight filter envelopes the expander works with your synths settings perfectly.

upavas and disco hooligans are both correct, a compressor smooths your peaks, so the loud freqs go down, but the result is that after you apply gain to the compressed signal the quiet freqs will now be naturally louder in context to the previously louder freqs...

WHAT??????
upavas you so wrong. and so is evrybody.
COMPRESSOR - COMPRESS the signal (the dynamic range) , wich give you the option to bring more low volume sounds up with the make-up gain.
EXPANDER - EXPAND the signal (the dynamic range) , oposite of compressor it makes it more bouncy and more peak-ish.. bring the HIGH volumes even higher.
its actualy the sama machine sometimes like C1 , only diffrent is the ratio higher or lower then 1:X (1 is bypass)
expander is inverted compressor... so if you have the tresh -20 and ratio 0.5:1 then it will double the volume of anything higher then -20DB. (EG sound peak at -10 DB will get to 0DB and the low volume doesnt change just whats above -20)
with compressor on setting of 2:1 and tresh -20db it will lower the volume of anything higher then -20 to "half" so if you have sound peak @ 0DB it will turn to -10DB (with 0 attack) www.sattelbattle.com

nice link , everybody should know that in and out!!
so i was explaining about compression , if its upward or downward its about the type of compressor.
expander i was explain only about upward expansion as C1 does
the diffrence is using (or not) the makeup gain i think

Yes, and since most (the ones I use anyway, which are not most to be honest) have the auto-make up gain switched on, the stuff below the threshold, does come through, louder.
