EWI USB?

Are there any EWI users on here? While I was checking out the quick controls in Cubase 6 (how to assign thread), I noticed the 'note expression' menu on the MIDI ch.

I have an EWI USB, but it's given me a lot of problems. After clicking the 'breath' control, and 'aftertouch' under the note expression section, those problems are gone.

However, there seems to be no velocity control, only on/off. In other words, it seems the note just turns on with a certain amount of pressure, and the note volume, etc., is not effected in any way by changes in breath pressure. I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to make cubase response to pressure changes.

edit: I would imagine this is not unique to just one DAW. If anyone uses an EWI, and has had success with getting it to respond well.... please post your experience.

I've never used one (though thought about picking one up as a toy) but...

1.) Can you not assign breath control to a synth's velocity on?

2.) Like 1. but with the reed bite?

3.) How do those rollers work with your thumb? Can you assign program changes to the pressure pads?

1) Would be up to the individual synth, no? I need to experiment with it more. Cubase 6 is the first program I've used the EWI on, where I'm not getting constant stuck notes. That change seemed to happen with the note expression options that I mentioned above. I was in beta tesing for a recent vst in the same class as say Albino or Sylenth1, and I played around with velocity options in the mod-matrix, but didn't get any good results. However, I was still using Orion then.... Thanks though, it might be a good angle to go at it from. So far, it seems some vsts like the EWI, and others get pissed off by it.
2) The mouthpiece sensivity is one of it's coolest features, by default it works like a vibrato effect. You can map it in the bundled program as well if you wish, but I'm not sure you'd want to change it. By default, it feels pretty natural, coming from a sax-player background.
3) The rollers are for octaves, and not for other things. It took about a week of playing (getting my chops back up to speed), but I'm used to them now. They might be a little tricky for some to get used to.

I was just testing the EWI + Gladiator2 on Cubase 6 a few minutes ago. Gladiator was one of the worst VSTs for me as far as response to the EWI. Seems to work great now.

Assigning breath to velocity didn't seem to do much. However, assigning breath control to volume does what I was looking for, but you can't set the value too high in the matrix, or it overdoes it. Also, assigning breath to fine-tune as well (not too drastic a value in the MM needed for this either), gives a pretty realistic feel.

Time to test some other VSTs.
