the easy way open a loop from a sound librairie , slice it remove the kick or use a hp filter so it dont mess with your kick bass (and other drums, use it just to get ttha extra groove it dont need much space in the mix)and then make your own break/loop with the slice,or don t even slice it.
or do your own breaks, no kick loops to use in your tracks (take time but you can get more original sounds )
or you could just make some percs with synthesis,or use some other drums sound, tambourine , marracass ...whaever percs you like ,don t forget the ride hehe no much psy artist use it but when you want taht extra power to blast the dancefloor and don t know how to push even more it s the utltimate sound, the cherry on the cake .when eevryone think its to the max and can t get more powerfull it s time to kill them with the ride haha |

i go through my samples folder and find about 20 or so samples i think sound cool, out of the ordinary, and may or may not fit my tune - everything from tom hits, to very warped hihats, to maracas, shakers, clicks, blips, etc...
i load them all into a sampler, reverse a bunch of them, and pretty much play around with triggering them randomly till i find something that fits my groove. reverse some sounds, maybe distort some... apply phaser or delay and/or plenty of reverb on the channel...
sometimes i'll have an idea in my head beforehand, and then it's not so random but planned. really, though, anything works. listen to some decent prog-psy for ideas - artists like sensient must spend more time programing percussion than any other element in their song.

There are tons of resources on the net for percussion samples dude... dig a little...
Other than that i'd recommend using alternative percussion as tablas, rims, shakers, tams, also any sound you like.
Load them into drum machine like NI Battery and tweak those shots. Reverse, pitch shift, envelope, add fx and make sure you place them nice along the loop.

Use sounds that aren't real drums, record your own even, bang on pots and pans, hit glass, knock on windows. Get creative and then chop and slice your loops into something useful. |

I would say, that the loops/melodies are more important, than the samples. Try to make interesting loops, playing around with volume, panning, cutoff and resonance of the notes. You can make almost infinite amounts of awesome loops and sounds with only one hihat, for example. After that add another and play with it, after that another... some snares here and there. Maybe cymbal or light crash, just for fun. Just try not to overdo it from adding too much samples, try to make the flow more groovy, don't just make it chhhchhhchhhchhh. Maybe try to use a good sampler, like Reakor to add a little wierdness and make the percs sound even more interesting. Automate effects over the perc through the progress of the track. etc. etc. etc.
