In post-Antique Catholic European countries the first unique creative design to appear that involved oil painting was the Insular art of the English Islands, where the only remaining illustrations are miniatures in Lighted manuscripts such as the Guide of Kells. These are most popular for their subjective design, although numbers, and sometimes moments, were also portrayed, especially in Evangelist images. Carolingian and Ottonian art also endures mostly in manuscripts, although some wall-painting stay, and more are recorded. The oil painting of this interval brings together Insular and "barbarian" impacts with a powerful Byzantine impact and an desire to restore traditional monumentality and poise.
