Bom!!!

"Monkey" coming on Creative Space comp this spring (?) and another track on Giiwa´s compilation at some point. About the album, we are searching for the right way to release it and got a lot to do to make it sound and feel anything like Tarinat. But it looks good...

Eraser vs Yöjalka - Tärinät [Exogenic 2003] CD

Nippy News
Tarinat
Random Sector
Huan Ona
Mad John's 12 Euros
Minor Discomfort
Spank
Paranoid Like a Normal Humanoid
Hurstinen Kikkaus
Hullujen Poikien Kerrosteoria

Eraser vs Yöjalka returned a year after their 2002 debut Round One with a second full-length album. Tärinät shows a rapid evolution of style into something completely unique on the psychedelic trance scene. While the album seems short, with 62 minutes of play time, the diversity of the selections more than makes up for it. The album art is top notch - a double gatefold digipak with some very psychedelic paintings that perfectly suit the music. I'll save most of my thoughts for the conclusion, here's a track-by-track run-down:

Nippy News busts it open with a sudden wailing intro that quickly delivers the listener into the midst of hard groovy beats and psychedelic atmospheres. It doesn't take long for the bass line to go off, mission impossible style. Slide guitar accentuates the funky atmosphere, and all those wailing psychedelic sounds are perfect for the atmosphere. A rock solid opener that totally gets one in the mood for more of this unique style.

The title track Tärinät features a shaky low-end beat with a bass line that rumbles around with impunity. Everything feels a little off base here, somehow unbalanced. Curious and demented synths flesh out this mood with flights of neurotic fancy that quiver and dazzle with wry rhythmic undulations. It isn't long before the first hint of warped jazzy riffs enter, spicing up the song with some wickedly entertaining sounds. A funny high-pitched melody also gets in on the action, harmonizing with the shifts in the bass line to provide another layer of stimulation. The composition is excellent - always evolving and changing in peculiar ways, always keeping the listener on edge, ready for absolutely anything at all. An incredible piece of energetic dancefloor-friendly psychedelic funk!

Random Sector opens with some ping pong samples that remind me of Saiko-pod and Quirk. Indeed, Eraser and Yojalka are the logical successors to the crazy style those two groups used to bust out before drifting off into progressive house territory. The introductory sequence leads into a phrenetic jumble of clockwork rhythms pulsing in time to the steady beat, slowly accumulating all sorts of peculiar sound effect layers. Two minutes into the track the hilariously light-hearted main theme comes in, bouncing around with absurd glee. There are some kind of funny horn sounds in use, and then more wailing with the guitar, all backed by a warped array of tripped out effects and more ping pong manipulation. The middle sequence features a lot of wiggling and writhing sounds, soon following by the snappy pulsing rhythms heard earlier, which leads into a cheeky staggered breakdown. The funk returns with greater power for one last run in the last minutes which is sure to cause dancefloor delight. Another excellent ever-changing piece of weird yet palatable madness.

Huan Ona is another bizarre romp through the strange funk-fortified soundscapes of E vs Y. The intro is a charming wistful tune played alongside chirping birds and a barking dog. It isn't long before another one of these oddly bent organic grooves comes surging forth, laced in dripping acidic effects and staggered voices that run scattershot across the sound field. That mental melody curls around in a sort of off-key way, leading into a distorted series of grinding riffs that merge nicely with the clattering breakbeats and dynamically evolving bass wiggles. The blues organ makes another appearance in the last minute, leading this deranged story to a timely conclusion. It's enough to make you feel high without drugs!

Mad John's 12 Euros is the first to break out of the party-time rhythms that have been showcased thus far. The intro is textured with tribal sounds, shuffling along with some pokey bass strikes and psychedelic effects. Soon enough there is a light and playful atmosphere with some organ notes grinding away in the high-end, nicely complimenting the groovy rhythms rattling around below. Due to the kicks not being nearly as hard as the previous tracks there is a lot more room for the sound particles to dance around, and the producers use this to good effects. This track is simply drenched in crazy noises! Right in the middle there is a curious little hook that seems to say "something's wrong!" and then some scratchy sounds come marching out to twist and tickle. The amusement never stops, as the track continues to bring out crafty new moods straight through. Delicious!

Minor Discomfort is a triplet tune, rather understated after all that has gone on. Perhaps it is time to take a bit of a breather? I never skip this track but taken individually it is somewhat dry. The atmosphere is quite developed however - and layering is once again quite evident. Nonetheless it is just a stop-over on the journey, nothing special.

The whip cracking samples in the next song clearly indicate that this is Spank? Ultra-funky bass guitar provides the dirty lines that groove and move, leaping up from the lower reaches to shake and convulse from time to time. Melodic influence is provided by some fine grinding acid sounds and an occasional organ foray, keeping to the theme of the album. This one is mostly about the drive, with constant pressure from the rumbling beat keeping it kicking. More good stuff, but not exactly a favourite here. Others have highlighted this as a favourite from the album, though I wonder if it has to do with this being more mild than the rest.

Paranoid Like a Normal Humanoid is not only a great name, but a fantastic track as well. It opens with some curious robotised singing, soon punctuated by tribal rhythms. And then this huge bassy beat kicks in, square lines rolling every which way! Squelchy acid noises make for interesting explorations of deranged mental states, and the atmosphere is full of buzzing effects. The mid-point break lets the bass groove undergo an upbeat reformation that keeps things light for a minute. Tension drops again, and in a series of tricky builds the artists nicely make a transition back to the heavy bubbling bass line, coated in mad synth work. It may be the shortest track on the album, at just over five minutes, but it's certainly a highlight. Paranoid is a fantastic word to use in the track title, as it pretty much describes the vibe of the album as a whole.

Hurstinen Kikkaus is the last dancefloor-ready track on the album, and it's a delightful combination of psytrance and funky soundscapes. The square rolling bass is back for another romp, and the jazzy touch is once again evident in the melodic programming. This is pure fun-time party beats, and for the DJs out there it's probably the cleanest selection from the whole album if you want to throw some of the suomi-flavour into a more conventional psytrance set. The big breakdown makes a return with a wicked breakbeat sound that casually makes an effortless switch back to the four-by-four - a nice touch. There are a few surprises for the last minutes, and it makes for another excellent exploration of the borderlands of groovy psychedelia.

Hullujen Poikien Kerrosteoria closes the album with what is clearly the most experimental piece on the album. Incomprehensible voices clutter up the intro, soon broken by a tastefully funky bass riff and the beginnings of the beat. It will rapidly become clear that the vocal manipulation is a huge part of the appeal of this track, as countless samples are manipulated with such skill that it boggles the imagination. The beat progressively builds in stages, first clipping in with a steady riff after a sample states "here we go now". Tension drops for a moment, and then things start getting even weirder! One of those mental tones infiltrates the beat, taking a measure before it begins to emerge with a screwy story to tell. A completely insane sound that is developing beneath all this will be noticed if you are paying close attention, and it comes out to play when the previous sound rests. A break, and then it's time for the beat to start picking up some wicked jungle grooves. The voices go on, and the breakbeat riffs grow in complexity in a biological way - precise yet organic. All I can say is "yeah!" this is fucking awesome. Eraser vs Yöjalka finishes off their album in the best way possible.

What a unique journey! There simply isn't another album like this. If you're out for anything similar, you might come up with Eat Static, or Haltya... and even then, these groups don't come all that close to the madness you will hear on Tärinät! More than slightly deranged and infectiously funky at times, this album is a wild trip through paranoid headspaces and truly weird atmospheres. Tärinät is so highly psychedelic that it puts almost all other modern releases to shame on that score! This is probably the best 'outsider' album released in the psychedelic trance scene over the last several years. With an impressive list of notable tunes, each with a distinct flavour, there's no question that this one earns top marks. As a whole listening experience it also works very well, with a nice flow across the whole album. Highly recommended for open-minded listeners and anyone who loves an injection of funk in their psytrance, and a healthy dose of weirdness in their musical experiences!

My efforts to be accurate have all been for nothing! The album is "Tarinat" (no dots) while track 2 is entitled "Tärinät" (dots). Sorry for the mix-up. It's a clever word-play these guys have here

Sooooo.......... when's the next one?

I love when you listen to certain songs so much you start to hear all the little things you didn't hear the other times. And things you heard before sound even better and make you smile and laugh.
I listened to this again today over headphones and it's just soooo fucking good! Ever little subtle sound is perfectly in place. Every crash symbol, every slap of the bass, snare hit and the composition is great. My dad is a jazz man from the beatnik days in san francisco and this album sounds like they're giving respect to him and giving me what I want as well. Listening to this is like visiting my best friends.
