Is it necassary to EQ samples (ie, atmosphereic DOOF kicks for the start of a phrase or just sampled kicks in general.)or should one just cut everything below 40hz so as not to get any mud? Should EQuing samples be a last resort at sculpting the sound to fit the mix or should EVERY element in a mix be EQued so it all fits perfectly?

Well, I think you mean eq the samples for mastering the sound. If the sample was recorded raw, you should eq it to make it sound better... If the sample was already mastered then if you mess the eq then you might be screwing with the sound in a bad way..

But if you mean eq as an effect you want on a sample, then there is no problem with that...

In the end, if it sound good, who cares what you did with it..           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

reminds me on the famous quote from original Delphi Oracle...

You can ask only those questions that you already know what the answer is. In a wierd sense this is in fact true.

So don't ask questions - know the answers!           "It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception"

eq EVERY channel will not necesery sound better. many times the samples are good enough (if your using quality samples ) so you dont really need to process them more.
bad use of Eq can really harm the sound

Everything should be equed...u know you havn't done it if you have like 10 tracks in a song

and if you think the sound is alright and doesn't need eq....play it thru a spectrum analyzer

most of the atmospheric samples or what you're talking about samples...usualy need some high pass,or an x-noize to take off a little bit of noise on them all that u usualy don't hear but if u do it to alot of sounds your most likely to have a cleaner mix...but that's just one of many steps to getting a cleaner mix...you need every possible way to get your mix tight.

i dont like to use Xnoize...it really suck the life out of every source. its actually a tool for treating old noisy record but i recomend to use good & clean samples instead.

x-noize can be very subtle when used properly. It can clean out reverb tails and create some nice (non musical) acoustic fx.           "It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception"

there is no such a thing as "perfect sample", if it was perfect on 1 track, this is dosn't means that it would perfect feets to another track....u always need to EQ it, or am i wrong?
