There's a high quality free download of a recent Psy Trance master I made for Equilizyme & Transiant, the track is called "Aloaceae". You can grab it from my web site Examples page here:

http://hermetechmastering.com/examples.html

It has a greater dynamic range than the current "standard" for this genre, and sounds all the better for it too! Note the increased sense of clarity, space, and transient impact. Available for free download as a 24 bit, 44.1kHz, 90MB FLAC file. No digital clipping or limiting was used on this track.

The artist's Soundcloud page can be found here:

And he's a member on here too!

All comments welcome!

sorry, is it in the wrong place? please move it.

how often do you get to listen to the original before it has been mastered? how can you tell what the mastering did on ALL commercial releases?           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Hey, I had a listen. Compared to most other commercial releases this track sounds different, in a good way.

The major thing I noticed is the sounds are more alive, very immersive and clean. It was interesting, I was trying to read the forum while listening to it and I noticed that I kept reading the same post over and over again because my mind drifted away into the music and I could not focus on anything else. Usually I put some music as background and do other things but this song just pulled me right in and I couldn't stop listening. Good stuff.

Which also made me realise just how well the song translates to headphones, in fact I haven't quite heard this before, but it is like you managed to remove the limitation of headphones and filled in space that I didn't think existed before. I have yet to blast it properly on speakers but I'll give it a try as soon as I can.

On a more technical note, I'll use this song as a reference to my mixes in the future as I also want my music to have a lot of dynamics. You have shown here how music can truly sound when we leave the loudness war behind even a bit, I can only wish that all artists and mastering engineers would follow these principles.

So all in all, excellent work by you and the artists, I'd love to hear more releases like this

I'd like to second the thanks for the very kind comments. It always helps when you have excellent source material to work with!

The trouble with a lot of Psy releases these days is that they never see the analogue world until they hit the final speaker. I'm not saying digital is crap/analogue is good, far from it, just that with staying ITB from start to finish, (including many online mastering studios which are plugin/digital only), you really have to be extra careful with the gain staging all the way through the chain, from tracking, through mixing and mastering, in order not to suffer from digititis, not to mention the damage over use of crappy plugins can lead to...

Running tracks through some well chosen and extremely high quality analogue outboard, along with someone who has a lot of experience in using it, can sometimes lead to somewhat "sweeter" results than staying ITB all the way through. Notice I'm not saying better, just different. I personally prefer the warmer sound of analogue, and I usually EQ only subtractively for a cleaner and more spacious sound. Don't even get me started on the abuse of digital limiters by mix engineers...

Yeah, she sounds great on headphones, I always check things at the final QC stage with a pair of Sennheiser HD600s fed by an extremely high quality DAC and headphone amp combo. You should hear what I have done to some of the upcoming tracks by Lapse (US based minimal techno producers, in the vein of Basic Channel etc.). Very clean an spacious.

Am also hoping you have a good reaction when you blast it on speakers! Think how nice it would sound on a Funktion One system when played back at a similar percieved level to all the over-limited stuff. Hopefully Tony Andrews (F1 boss and designer) would be proud:

Anyway, I digress, just very happy that someone appreciated all the work that went in!

Thanks once again, and keep watching this space!           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma
