I finished the arrangement of my track, I did the compression (now it's all loud and not clipping :-)), but still one major problem - the bass doesn't sound good with the kick drum.
I know I need to fix this using EQ - but how? Any tips for me?
Bilbo? Yuli? Someone?

my 2 cents if it helps: :)

for me, the biggest problem is not musical idea's, but using sounds that fit sonically well together, the kick and the bass being the most important.
if you have used sounds that compete rather than complement each other, no amount of eqing will fix the mix.
you should be able to hear this straight away,
one trick i use is to have all kick drums loaded into the sampler, play the bass line, and scroll through the kicks until you find something that fits well together.
other factors to consider are the cut off and resonance of your bass patch.

hope i helped a little :)

this is the trick:
use the bass - kik pairs that don't interfer in frequency:
make a freq analysis of your kik (with no fx)
the same for your bass lines

now make them not to be in the same place in frequency,e.g. u have a 12 ways EQ:
(roughly)
make sure the bass and the kik
do not interfer with each other.
the best is when bass and kik have no common freqs.
if they do - make the level of them a bit weaker...

that's another tip from 1000 tips on mastering
;)

good luck Mike!

"make a freq analysis of your kik (with no fx)"
How? Using Sound Forge's freq analysis?

And like a smart man once said: RTFM :-)

yes, just see where (in which freq) is the most of the signal.
you can use any pro audio editor.
(wavelab will do too)
bomski
i also think there must be "real-time" vst plug
for freq analysis..
something with openGL.

biblo, my problem isn't a kick with bassline matching... just the final result (when i'm converting it to wav) sounds not well, i'm equalizing it on my stereo/headphones and it's cool to my ears but on other systems it's different...

boom!

WAvelab is good for the Analyzis...
it has a 3d graph which shows all the freqs changes along the wav length... and you can change the properties to fit whatever you need... I use that alot :)

Prosect - This is a big problem to EQ with headphones , the frequencies in headphones could never reach the level of frequencies in monitors, this is why you hear it difference in other sounds systems/racks.

to mike : if you have EQ on each channel then try to move the freq. to another level, so the bassline won't get in the way of the Kick and the other way.
usualy the bassline is on 'DO' and the kick is too on 'DO' so in this case try to do 1 of 2 things :
1.Move the bassline to another octave ('MI-FASOL')
2.Play with the EQ of the bassline so they won't sit on the same Freq.

btw: if you don't have EQ on each channel then :
Open an EQ plug-in on the bassline channel and start playing with it, or if you want to save memory and cpu then don't open the EQ plug-in in the sequencer , open it in S.Forge/Wavelab and then open the EQ and export in to your sequencer.

The kick drum is on C and my bassline is on D (most of the time).

BTW - I compressed my entire track and now the kick/bass sounds ok, but when the kick comes in it's like everything is on mute. Tell me if I'm correct - this is because the kick drum is wayyyyyyyyy above the average level of everything else and then the compressor just lowers the kick drum together with everything?
So I should lower the volume of the kick drum and then the compressor wouldn't compress it that strong but I will still get the same loudness of the kick because it will get compressed anyway?

thats probebly the problem , you must lower the Kick level and hear that the Kick talk in the same level with the bassline.
cheers

Mike, you should apply comperssion only after you played with the levels without it,
never start working with compressors from the beginning - it's an effect, you need to use it only if you need it, man!

besides, the attack elease time of the compressor should be low - for not getting this silence beforeafter the kik.

this issue is described in the tutorial fir compressor in the site i've posted before.

good luck !

Michael,

Try to put the Kik + Bass in one group and apply the FX ( Compression/ Limiting ) on the group.

B4 that EQ each one individually. Remember - Kik drum is what ppl move their feet to and the Bassline is what they groove their butt to and both of them important.. They have to b in harmony otherwise the mix of the track wont sound good.

Practice is the only thing u need right now. Play with it. Eventually u will catch with it

Have a good one
