EQing big, layered Synths

Whats up everybody. Ive been producing for several years now. I used to mostly make Progressive House/Trance where I had synths but they weren't overpowering like in Psy tunes. I understand how to generally EQ, give each channel its space in the mix, separating frequencies to avoid muddyness, etc. I haven't had much trouble mastering those tunes and getting good clarity. However, now I'm really getting serious about Psytrance production. My question is, when I have these HUGE HUGE layered synths, that cover so much of the frequency spectrum, how do I balance these so they don't compete with other mids and highs in the mix and yet not lose their character. Please share your tips on how you get a huge sound that doesnt clash with the rest of the song. Im using Cubase SX2 with Waves Diamond and Reason sometimes.

Thanks in advance everybody. Ive been reading this forum and I haven't found more valuable and informative people than you guys.

You're probably aware of this one, but I'll mention it just in case:

Two leads in the same frequency range can be layered if they have their own reverb 'space'. I've gotten away with having a big spacious reverb for one lead and then another, closer, reverb for a second lead with the same frequencies. Even though the leads may compete frequency-wise, the ear can distinguish them as one appears to be in front of the other. To further this effect, compress the 'closer' sound more than the 'farther' one.

It still takes some EQing to keep the levels behaving, but this trick is invaluable for creating deep, lush tracks.

Actually I've never come across that tip in all my years producing. I definitely need to try this. Thanks a lot.

panning and dynamic panning is also an option. take one to the left and one to the right and you'll room for another one in the middle. now the question is how many leads can you put in a surround mix ?           "a new art came into my mind which only you can create, the Art of Noises, the logical consequence of your marvelous innovations." Try playing with the delays.
Put both sounds in the middle, and apply a pingpong delay for each, but reverse the stereo for one them, so one goes R L R L and another L R L R.
Usually works

so simple so beautifull...
it's one of my favorites tricks.
dont forget the cut options you can realy make emotinal things with it (and of course automation).

and if you're into hard sounds try this:

inside the layer try to apply a dist only on the delays (in the first) and for the second try th use some boost or overdrive Not on the delays.

it's take some work but it pays

wonder no one said nothin bout modulated filters...
they can play in bp\hp\notch mode and cutoff changes with lfo but in oposite directions. this might change a bit the sound but worth tryin.
notch filter or bp+notch ment for this situation..

panning is very good also.

i always try that main freq of two or three leads never b the same... then u must ruin the sound harmony with eq... to seperate em.. think bout it from the begining.. u build freq map... so build it with thinkin ahead..(as u know or not when u change freq in eq its effects the harmonic freq's of the melody-usually if cuting its more stable but boost over +3 or +6 db.. is touching the harmony)           www.sattelbattle.com

Thanks all for the tips. However, the Ohmboys delay would help resolve clashing in the delay department perhaps, but wont help in terms of the original synth hit itself, no?
