EQ steals the power of my leads!

It's the second time I approach a similar problem in my tracks: during the mixdown I realize there's too much going on in the low-mid frequencies. Apparently it's my leads again, but when I EQ the shit out of them to get rid of the muddy frequencies, it takes away most of the sound and power of the lead.

Here's the example of a simple 303 I made in Sylenth so you can get the picture:

And after EQ: http://www5.zippyshare.com/v/43739200/file.html

Of course this is extreme EQ cut, but when I cut less, there's a huge peak at 500hz that messes with my mix... How to have both powerful leads and a clean mix? Any suggestions will be welcome

Maybe your acoustics tricks you and second try combination of lowcut(try steeper cut like 48 db/octave) and lowshelve, also look for some stereoizing, panning of that channel or even M/S processing.Final listen with context of mix.Cheers

Try not to make your cuts so aggressive in your eq, try to use different eqs for each part of your track, like one eq plugin for the bass, and other type of eq plugin for your leads, remember to use stereo imaging in your leads, you can use stereo imaging plugins, or maybe you can multiply your channels and send one to the right and one to the left.

it's down to the arrangement then...

you should try and distribute the sounds in the mix on the spectrum, so not much EQ is needed to make them fit inside the mix. it starts with the note you choose, then filter settings on instruments (maybe you're cutting to much highs or there aren't many), so forth and so on. but usually choosing different octaves for different sounds is where it's at. cheers

Dont use too many leads together that has that mid range mud in. yes the arrangement playes its role. I usually give my 200hz-800hz range only one sound at a time-

also try using low shelf instead of highpass or play with the Q because having a steep Q may take away some of the energy.

And finally try scooping with a fairly wide Q the muddy area out with only 2dbs or more, though this is not usually a standard in production.

^^^^^^^

and more...

having a good bassline driving the track will give the power u need sometimes in ur mix at all....well my leads always are low cutted at 100hz, i always leave the other space, than i do some finals cuts, high passes on low octave leads, cut a little bit more to right till 400hz on c3 c4 leads...always plawing with octaves...

sometimes a little notch cut on 300-500hz on c2-c3 leads will open some space in the lead soud and give some strenght...

OTHER THING

if the leads are'nt sounding good with or without EQ, then u need to better Synthesize it mate... mono leads have more strenght, less ressonance on straight leads and soo on

but should be. mixing has a lot to do with enhancing what you like about a sound in context, even if it just means lowering the volume on less relevant parts of it.

This right here. When obtaining the right timbre, I'll make sharp cuts on annoying frequencies, but usually I never go below -6db. I feel that even unwanted frequencies HAVE to be there.
