The final rule is to learn all the rules so that you know how to break them

EQ has only 1 rule man - avoid distortion ... coz thats the most over looked aspect . when trying to boost ... |

Serious advice here now:
When e.q.ing try to visualise and 'pre-hear' where the exact frequency you want to cut/boost is and what effect it will have before you touch the e.q. itself... then keep that sound in your head, go to the frequency/ies that you've visualised and work from there to get it more precise.
I personally boost quite abit, but very carefully so the tone doesn't get distorted or changed. As Colin said though cutting does usually sound more natural.

you know how to find a freq that's annoying you, don't you?
Very narrow q , boost a lot and scan the spectrum area until you find it.
Avoid turning it down a lot if it is one of the sound's basic freqs. Better try the freqs surrounding it...much smoother.
The same applies for boosting...and boosting fundamental freqs of a sound is like turning the volume up, not exactly the concept of eqing.
Always filter out freqs that are not important (eg some low freqs on mid freq lead sounds, mid freq on bass and kick that will make them sound boxy.....etc) because they'll eat the headroom and mess the mix.
Generally what you want to do is to strip each sound and keep them as far apart from each other as possible and spread all over the freq spectrum.
There'a a lot more but that's a start, i think.
If you want to control your mix or create a certain sounding mix you should know the basics at least.
The 'there are no rules' does not apply anywhere in the frequency spectrum. Of course your ears and taste are your guides but it would take you many years to figure it all out by try and error. That's what the basic rules do. They give you more control and try to explain the physics of sound. |
